Aerial Equipment

On a prime world the locals call "Horizon", there are a number of differences from yer run o' the mill prime worlds. First off, somethin' 'bout the metahumans--them's elves, halflings an' dwarves like me an' Greta--just seems off somehow. The elves, fer instance, they ain't the world's reserves of ancient magic knowledge, they don't have any hid-from-human-eyes cities nobody's ever heard of, and they're tribals, like the elves of that blasted desert-rock Athas. But instead of runnin', Horizon's elves fly.

The beasts they fly're called skybaxes (go here and here to discover my inspiration.--XB), great soddin' furry critters with huge heads an' four wings, one fer each leg. These beasts fly above the clouds, an' the elves have special needs fer their aeronomadic lifestyle. I jes' made thet word up.

Heh.

It's important t' note thet a full-grown skybax can only carry about 200 pounds afore slowin' down considerably, so portability's top-ranked among the elves. A lot of this equipment's good fer any sort of air jockeys, so don't be turnin' up yer nose to it jes' yet.

Ekkotaz
This is a paste-like mixture of crushed berries, nuts and occasionally dried meat. Pound-for-pound, it is one of the most nourishing substances known in the northlands of Horizon, which makes a very good choice when traveling light. Ekkotaz is twice the nutritional value of iron rations, or four times as nourishing as normal trail rations. In other words, one pound of ekkotaz is enough to feed a Medium creature for four days.
Food; 5 gp per pound.

Flight goggles
When flying, it is very easy to get a bug (or worse) in the eye. Corneal scratches are very common among those for whom flight is not a way of life, and poor vision is one of the things that tables an adventurer sooner than anything else. Those who call the sky their home, however, know to protect their eyes. A good pair of goggles is more important to them than a pair of boots is to a groundling.
Flight goggles come in two varieties--single-lens and dual-lens. Primarily a difference of taste, single-lens goggles offer better visibility at greater expense and fragility, while dual lenses are cheaper and harder to break, but tend to distort the wearer's vision.
Equipment; single-lens 2 gp per pair, dual-lens 1 gp per pair; weight ½ lb.
NOTE: In campaigns where glass is rare or nonexistent, thin sheets of mica are used instead.

Smoked lenses
Used for high-altitude flight or in snowy regions, smoked lenses protect the wearer from eye strain. An even darker variant, midnight lenses, prevent blindness of any sort caused by light and grant a +4 to saves against gaze attacks and illusions with the [pattern] subtype. On the other hand, in daylight conditions, visibility is reduced to 5 feet. In lighting conditions less than full daylight, the wearer of midnight lenses is effectively blind, and suffers all attendant penalties.
Exotic item; price +100%.

Ghostfire
When this powder is shaken onto fuel for a fire, the fire immediately dims, giving off half the normal radiant heat and reducing emitted light to the equivalent of starlight. A ghostfire can still be used to cook when food is placed into the coals, and the light it emits is quite bright to creatures with low-light vision, even from a distance. One pouch is enough to treat enough fuel for a small fire for eight hours.
Alchemical item; Craft DC 25; 5 gp per pouch; weight -.
For Horizon elves:
Alchemical item; Survival DC 15, Craft DC 15; weight -.

Hardalt, stringed
Dried hardalt (a type of freshwater squid) that has been "weathered" by a process known only to elves, almost all of the water has been eliminated, but the hardalt remains flexible and shreddy. Stringed hardalt reduces carry weight by a factor of 24 (24 lbs of fresh hardalt makes 1 lb of stringed hardalt). Generally, 12-15 lbs will feed an average crested skybax for one day. Skybaxes only eat stringed hardalt when there is plenty of drinking water available.
Elves and other creatures may eat stringed hardalt, but it is quite tough and resilient, so it is typically chewed until the strong flavor subsides, when it is spit out.
Food; 2 gp per pound.

Pastry wool
Moved from Equipment I
This rare fabric is made from the superfine wool of lambs (or your campaign's equivalent). Pastry wool gets its name from the fact that it is made up of many wispy, gossamer layers, like good pastry. While pastry wool clothing is expensive and very light in weight, it is also as warm as heavy wool, even wet.
Exotic item; Craft (weaving) DC 25; cost normal item price x3; weight x ½.

Spidersilk rope
Stronger and more slender still than ordinary silk rope, spidersilk rope has a stress load of 1000 lbs. per ¼ inch. A side feature of spidersilk rope is that it stretches up to 175% of its resting (normal) length.
Spidersilk rope has 6 hit points and can be burst with a DC 28 Strength check. Its suppleness provides a +2 circumstance bonus to Use Rope checks.
Exotic item; Use Rope DC 20 (to make); 1 gp per foot; weight 1 lb per 50 feet (resting length).
