Air Travel to the Beach House
Flights into and out of Wilmington (ILM) tend to be disproportionately expensive in
relation to other legs of the flight. There are few airlines that fly directly to Wilmington.
If you plan on flying and find the costs to Wilmington exorbitant, do
what the locals do and fly into or out of the Raleigh/Durham
(RDU) airport, and then drive to your final destination.
There are multiple car rentals at each airport. If a car has been included in
the swap, take a one-way rental to Wilmington to pick up our car.
Plan on about a 2.5 hour drive from RDU to the beach house.
Others fly out of a smaller airport in
Myrtle Beach,
served by Spirit airlines
Some recent ads for Spirit Airlines showed one-way costs to
NY/LaGuardia at $69, and one-way costs to Los Angeles and Oakland, CA at
$129. The drive to the beach house takes about 45 minutes.
Finally on some occasions for international flights, we have driven to
Charlotte, NC or Greensboro for flights. Each
is about a 4.5 hour drive.
If you are fortunate enough to have a private plane, the Brunswick County airport
is about three-miles from the beach house, just across the bridge to the
island.
Driving
The following driving directions should enable you to reach the beach house from
most major locations. If you are driving up the coast from South Carolina, you have
three choices. You can take an ocean route through Myrtle Beach. Generally the ocean
route is 4- lane but long delays can occur in Myrtle Beach. If we are feeling leisurely,
we sometimes take this route. You can also take Interstate
95 North to either US 74 or Interstate 40 and then take I40 east.
For those taking US 74, use the Charlotte instructions. While
sections of this route are 2 lane, it is probably the fastest if you are
coming from the south. For I40, use the Raleigh instructions.
Coming from the north, use I95 and then go east on I40 using the Raleigh
instructions.
