Ernie Kovacs is a fresh, plastic-faced comic who bosses a wacky comedy of errors seasoned with casual insanity for Dumont nightly at 11:15. A 6'2", 185-pounder, Kovacs brought his cigar-studded face and his bent for chaos entire over from a CBS show, Kovacs Unlimited. The new show is just as mad. The camera follows him as he roams through the backstage clutter, pausing now and again to smear the lens with a bit of custard pie. He discusses the format with singer Edith Adams (of Wonderful Town) while on the air, will sometimes stop to criticize the show.
Kovacs has a set of stock characters who he puts on display once nightly. Best known is Uncle Gruesome, befanged teller of fairy tales re-worked after the manner of Mickey Spillane.
