Japanese Bobtails
We were looking at one of our cat books, and we came across a photo of a Japanese Bobtail. We were struck by how similar the cat in the picture looked to Bobby.
These are some of the characteristics of Japanese Bobtails (and Bobby shares them all):
- They are active, intelligent, talkative cats. Their soft voices are capable of nearly a whole scale of tones; some people say they sing.
- They like to carry things in their mouths, and most enjoy a good game of fetch.
- They are intelligent, fun, playful, affectionate, spirited, beguiling, elegant, beautiful, exquisite.
- The Bobtail is a medium-sized cat with long, clean lines. The body is long, lean and strong - level from hip to shoulder with the hind legs much longer than the forelegs.
- They have large oval, slanted eyes, and high cheekbones.
- The tail, the very thing that first identifies the breed, is unique. Though there are categories into which tails fall (shaving brush, corkscrew, a clown's pompom, fan, hook, etc.), most are less than 3" long.
- Bobtail's tails should be very gently handled as it is sensitive - some parts are usually fused. It's delightful to see that most Bobtails will indeed wiggle (Dare I say wag?) their little bunny tails, a trick that always elicits a smile.
Japanese bobtails continue to be considered symbols of good fortune in Japan. A particularly fetching good-luck charm is the maneki-neko or "beckoning cat," a Japanese bobtail seated with one paw raised. A maneki-neko statue is often found in storefronts and restaurants.
