Introduction

You are finding computers in every aspect of your life.  You are probably already using a computer to surf the net or for word processing, but are you really "computer competent"?

The purpose of this unit is to help you become competent in computer basics in order to help you better understand computers and be better prepared for college and for employment.

Instructional Objectives

Students will:

1.    Explain computer competency

2.    Identify and distinguish between the four types of computers

3.    Distinguish application software from system software

4.    Identify some of the most common software applications

5.    Identify major events and important people in the evolution of computers

These objectives are aligned with the CSDE K12 Frameworks, Curricular Goals and Standards, Learning Resources and Information Technology, Grades K-12 - By the end of Grade 12, students will be independent, competent and confident users of information and technology and able to apply related strategies for acquiring basic skills and content knowledge, communicating ideas, solving problems and pursuing personal interests.
