Season 2003/04 is a fresh start for club stalwart Mike Catt. After two seasons fighting off injuries that would have made a lesser charcter hang up his boots, Mike is still taking up the challenge with his beloved Bath.
Having won everything there is to win in the domestic game, a Grand Slam and 56 caps, as well as two World Cups and two Lions tours, one would probably be forgiven for thinking that now might be a good time to pack it all in and go and play some golf. That thought wouldn’t occur to Mike, who has been working exceptionally hard on his fitness all summer. He is determined to force his way back into the the squad for Australia in the autumn and take his tally to three World Cups, and he will not rule out a third Lions tour in 2005!
Mike has always strived in adversity, exploding onto the international scene in the mid-90’s as a Full back when England were struggling in that area. At Fly-Half he was often blamed for some poor England performances, yet has played for England at every position in the back division except Scrum-Half. There are few now that have not come to realise the talent and outstanding natural ability of Mike Catt making him a favourite player of recent times.
When Mike Catt plays Bath seem to be lifted by his presence. He constantly worries defences with his running lines and his distribution skills, but also with his kicking out of hand. This has been an area in which criticism has been levelled at Catty in the past, but there is now little doubt that he is a world class kicker whether it be in defence or attack.
A fit Mike Catt is a thorn in any side, and a real asset to Bath Rugby and England.
