How to Become a Member

You may join NHVA at any time, whether or not you have received a certification or started a class.  There are six levels of membership:  Driver (you must be 18 years of age), MRT (also called a First Responder, must be 14 years of age), EMT-B (Basic, must be 16), EMT-I (Intermediate, must be 18), Explorer (ages 14 - 18, no certifications), and Observer (waiting for certification).

If you decide you become a member, you will be required to fill out an application form (which may be completed below).  A basic security check will be made and your application will be brought to the Board of Directors for acceptance at their next meeting.  You will be issued a uniform (basic blue EMS pants and an NHVA t-shirt or polo shirt), and whatever other goodies are available.   Along with the standard uniform, we've been supplied gifts to show how the corps appreciates our service.  Members are openly appreciated for their dedication and service.

When a class is offered at the certification level you are interested in, NHVA will pay half the cost of the course up front.  After you have successfully completed your course and after you have been an active member of NHVA for six months after receiving your certification, NHVA will reimburse you for the other half of your course.

Our volunteer shifts are Monday through Thursday from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and all shifts on Saturdays and Sundays (two shifts each day, 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM).  The Monday through Friday day shifts (6:00 AM to 6:00 PM) are covered by paid staff from an outside service (Emergency Resource Management [ERM]), although it is possible to volunteer for one of these shifts as long as two weeks notice is given to our President so that she may advise ERM.  We try to keep the Friday day shift staffed by volunteers instead of using ERM in order to save money.  Again, you must give our President two weeks notice if you’d like to volunteer Friday during the day.  You sign up for your own shifts.  You may sign up for as many shifts per month as you’d like, but each member is required to cover at least 12 hours per month.  A standard shift is one of the two 12-hour shifts (either day or night), but you are allowed to split your required 12 hours per month into two six-hour shifts.
