The photo on this page was taken with a Nikkor 24-120mm/f3.5-5.6 zoom at 24mm
with the newest Kodak Royal Gold 400 film exposed at EI 400. Exposure was by matrix
metering. According to Kodak, you will be purchasing the new generation
of Royal Gold 400 if you buy film with an expiration date of 4/2002 or later.
After processing, the new film can be differentiated from the old by checking the edge of the negatives, where
you should find that it is labeled at 400-3 instead of 400-2.
The first image shown below is a full frame scan, resized to web dimensions. The
second and thrid images are 2700 dpi segments of the photo
which are intended to reveal the grain of the film. The "grain" images were
all scanned direct from the negative on a Nikon LS30 scanner at 2700 dpi with Nikon's bundled
software. No digital Dust & Scratch removal nor sharpening was
performed on the "grain" images. The first image, showing
the full picture, was scanned with the Nikon LS30 with Vuescan software
at 900 dpi and outputted to 48 bit TIF. Dust & Scratch removal was performed using Vuescan's
"Clean" algorithm. Subsequently, colors of the full-frame imag were adjusted with
PhotoShop's "Levels" and then the images were resized to web dimensions and sharpened
with Photoshop. The color adjustment was necessary because Vuescan's settings which normally work
fairly well for the older generation of Royal Gold 400 did not work very well in this case.
