Calabash Cattery

***Optimized for media viewed by Internet Explorer*** Our home is our cattery and all the cats we have, now numbering seven, have the run of the house, except for the basement and the attic. We never use cages. Any cat who may be need to be isolated from the rest for a while gets his own room. We raise our kittens by hand, giving them love and care from the day they are born. They stay with us for 12 weeks - this insures a friendly, well adjusted and basically trained grown up pet. We have been breeding Maine Coon Cats since 1984 when we purchased our first (Ailurophile's Marquis of Calabash, aka Rusty Rascal) from Ailurophile Cattery, then also of Norwalk, CT. Edith and Eli Gerver gave us encouragement and we took Rascal to a CFA show where he made a "final" and we were hooked! Our aim is to produce Maine Coons that meet the CFA show standards for the breed, and that are also healthy, affectionate and with a "people oriented" personality. These last traits are the most important to us in our breeding program. The quality show cat just follows naturally. Our cats do well in CFA (Cat Fanciers Association) and last year one of the cats we breed became the second best Maine Coon in the entire USA. His name is "Savi" (Calabash's Cabernet Sauvignon) and he is owned now by Brenda Flahault, of New Jersey. Recently, we have studied feline genetics at Cornell University and been involved in the hip dysplasia studies at U Penn and the cardiomyopathy study at U Davis, CA, since the early days of our breeding.
