LITCHFIELD COUNTY

On-Line

The purpose of this web page is to introduce the World Wide Web Community to Litchfield County, Connecticut.

Litchfield County is a great place to visit, and an even greater place to live. Located just to the south of the Berkshires, we don't make any pretenses about the cultural riches of the Berkshires. "We're just better." After all, George Washington never slept in the Berkshires, but he did sleep in several places in Litchfield County.

Litchfield County aside from all of our other wonders is the home of one of the most important gem mines in North America. This is the Marryal or Roebling mine in New Milford. This mine has produced some of the world's finest examples of Aquamarine, and Golden Beryl ever seen. this is not the only famous mine in the county. In Salisbury was a very rich and important iron mine. Because this mine and its attendent blast furnaces were available to the colonists during the revolutionary war we probably owe our independence to this iron mine tucked away in the far northwest corner of Connecticut.

Winsted is the breeding ground for our modern method of corporate finance. Lawrence Hinsdale, a Winsted Native, and a member of the Connecticut Leglislature in the "Hinsdale Act of 1836" laid the groundwork for modern corporate finance that today is used throughout the entire world. The concept was simple, a stockholder could only be held libel for the value of his shares in a joint stock company.

We are going to begin our story by telling you about our natural history starting with geology.
