Band of the Week:

Nirvana

Home

Every once in a while the world sees a band that has influences on a pop culture that has never been seen or even conceived before. Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Chris Novoselic proved that point true by ramming into the popular scene with squeeling guitars chugging choruses and lyrics that peirce through all that commercial and go straight to the heart. Front man Kurt Cobain started playing at a early age and soon discovered "punk" rock. He was emotionally driven by anything with this label as it stood for a sort of musical freedom that wasn't in the media. Kurt started going to parties where he saw bands like The Melvins. He quickly started writing songs and became entranced in all punk rock had to offer. He soon met Chris Novoselic and as soon as they played for the first time, they instantly clicked and it turns out Kurt had found a life time friend.

After a drummer change from the early Dale Crover to Chad Channing, they had found their nitch and got involved with a record company that released punk records. Their first album "Bleach" seemed to have a sufficated sound of irony and angst that the new crouds had been looking for. Jason (the lead guitarist at the time) had gone on tour but was quickly becoming un-attatched to kurt and the band. Soon they had let him go and became the band they had wanted to be. Touring was amazing for them as they crossed the country in "The Van" and played bars and all sorts of places.

After the break from chad channing a new drummer was found and proved to be the exact thing kurt wanted. He played hard and kept the beat and thats all they needed. Dave Grohl joined the band just in time to record Nevermind, Nirvanas second album. As they were in Europe on their massive tour, Nevermind hit stands in the U.S. When the band returned they were greeting by the masses and took on a huge culture shock from being unknown to now having the most popular record in america. Kurt was stunned that a song like Teen Spirit could even go so far. Smells Like Teen Spirit was inspired by a girl at a party one time with Kurt. She said Kurt smelled like Teen Spirit the popular deodorant and as Kurt passed out or fell asleep she wrote a poem on the wall which eventually kurt turned into the popular song.

Grunge rock broke all the rules and Kurt was still going with the release of Incesticide and In Utero. Kurt felt like In Utero as an album was a huge mistake. He disliked most of the things on it and became frustrated with its sound. In Utero marked the last full release of a album from Nirvana.

The band came to terms and soon were offered a unplugged on MTV. Kurt loved the idea but noted that the audience wouldn't be getting their everyday songs. Kurt carefully planned these songs with covers like "Lake of Fire" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", Kurt enthralled the audience and left most speechless with his heart-wrenching performance.

Nirvana will go down in history as they are still listened to today. Kurts legacy lives on in all the fans hearts and he and his band will never die out.
