Hi, my name is Amy Dominguez. I am 36 years old and I am a student at FSU Panama. I am attending to obtain a degree in Information Systems. I made a decision to return to college to obtain a second Bachelors degree. I currently have a Bachelors Of Science in Nursing. I have worked many years as a nurse and found it a very rewarding career. The deciding factor for me to return to school is not because I am dissatisfied with my career choice but because I found here in Panama that working as a nurse is not satisfying to me. In Panama, nurses make little money and have very little respect. I was taught in nursing school the importance of autonomy and decision making skills. The doctors in Panama give little regard to the nurses. The doctors believe they are the master and the nurse the handmaiden. When a doctor speaks here, the nurse says "Si, Doctor!" as in how high should I jump. People do not realize that nurses are professional too. The nurse is the one who is with you throughout your stay in the hospital, we are the one who notices the signs and symptoms and keep track on your progress and report it to the doctor. The doctor is only with you maybe 30 minutes of the day. The nurse is the one who keeps the doctor informed of the patients status, carries out the everyday care and carries out the orders of the doctor. We make very important life and death decisions. For this reason, I find myself back in school in search of a rewarding career that I can use while living in the Republic of Panama.
