Also, the forums have taken a change. They look great. Thanks to Derek on both of these things! :) Amy Lee from Evanescence : "its hard beeing a teenager" -Thanks to N_Girl for this We met up with frontfigure and vocalist Amy Lee from Evanescence. The band that have the smash hit Bring Me To Life. Amy Lee and Ben Moody met at the age of fourteen and het it of right away. Then instantly knew they were gonna start a band. How did you meet? -We met at church cam, Amy eagerly tell us. -I moved a lot during my childhood and had trouble getting friends. -I never fit in anywhere, and had trouble getting in touch with other people. -Anyways I was at this camp. My parents thought it would be good for me. I would get new friends and such. But I didnt feel at home at all. Everybody was so different that me. I would rather go around on my own. Therefor it feelt really uncomfotable and I just wanted to leave, even though I knew that was impossible. So nono of the camp counselors would care, and get me involved I found myself an abandoned piano. I sat down and started playing, hoping that everyone would leave me alone. What I didnt know was that Ben listened to me. He came up and sat next to me after a while, Amy tell and gets quiet and toughtful. -He wasnt like the others, she tells. -He looked like a real rebbel. Wore black and had numerous of piercings. I thought he was atleast 18, but as it turned out he was 14. Two Souls - One Thought Ben and I connected right away. We were both musicians and had a lot in common. -All the other kids was doing sports and other activeties. ben and I kept to ourselves. We didnt fit in with the others. What kind of teenager were you really? -I have always been an artist really. I have always felt different, not nessesarily becuase I am so different, no, I dont really know how to explain it. I had trouble fitting in at school. It was few friends and beeing an a gang and all that. I went to a private school. There was three different type of gangs, and if you wanted friends you had to be in one of them. Those three groups were the popular and stupid cheerleaders, or you had the nerdes, the smart ones and you had the dopeheads. I didnt fit in in any of those, Amy Lee say and get thoughtful again. -I couldnt find anyone else that was like me. A lot of people judged me and looked at me as a freak. Wow, that muct have been really hard? -yes ofcourse it was. Puberty isnt exactly the easiest part of your life. And on top of that i was alone all the time. I had my art though. I took dramalessons in school, but art and active was not a riority in our school. All the money went to sports and cheerleading. I fought for new costumes for plays, but everything went to something else. That made me care, and I got really pissed at the whole thing. I didnt not care about anything. I did some things to not get like a total outsider. I dressed as anonomysly as possible, and wanted just to dissapear in the crowd. But when I got home i got exentric and had to get out emotions. Thats when i painted, drew, wrote a lot, and also played dress up. I love costumes and the idea of playing a role. I have always loved that and still do. Clothes is one of my big passions. I love clothes. The idea of putting them together and apart. I designed all the colthes in our latest music video Going Under and i am really proud of it. Love to play roles Amy Lee seem like a honest and open girl. She seems super confident and isnt afraid to come with own thoughts and opinions. Or share her experiences. Have you always been this confident? -Oh, no. It was worse with confidence. Noone manage to stay confident through out the teenage years. But I love myself and respect myself. I look at myself as a beautiful person, yes I do. I have alwasy done that. But you cant be a teenager and always be happy. its impossible. I have definitley had my down periods where i have hated myself, and been really depressed. I just have wanted to end it all. But I have gotten through it somehow. Maybe by talking about it and beeing myself, even though its hard. Atleast thats better than beeing the type of person that pretends to be happy- all the time. Like everything is perfect. But deep down inside they are really, really unhappy and sad. There are a lot of those. What was the solution for you, you think? -The answer is in not caring to much about what others think of you. Or care at all. You have to take care of yourself, and be happy about yourself. That is easier said that done, but as soon as you manage, wow. That when life can begin for real. Thats when you can accept yourself, who you are and what you are trying to be. Thats when you dont have to adjust to be like everyone else wants you to be. Thats when you become free. Thats a huge relief. To me it was almost like a revalation. Hmmm... -ofcourse, Amy say knowing what we mean. -ofcourse it is hard, espechally in school where all we do is to judge eachother. We are cruel and horribel towards eachother. We say thing only to hurt others. Found strength in art and music Even if Amy was a lot on her ownin her youth she had way to express herself in, How did you find strength during the teen years? -Well, through what I told earlier. i love getting into character, and beeing different things. Usung clothes and art. For example going home, putting on a waiter uniform, and beeing that for a couple of hours, I thought was great. I love to slip into characters and get out bed things that way. Where do you buy your clothes? -Ohh, everywhere, Amy tell us. I shop in costume shops, second hadn shops and everywhere you can find clothes out of the ordinary. You'll never catch me in the dressing room at H&M(I bet she said something different, but i have no idea what) Well it could happen, but just to buy something I could make something out of. My biggest problem right now is that I dont have time anymore. Its to much work. Before i worked when i had to, so this is really unusual to me. The Road towards a record deal Amy Lee and Ben Moody lived in Little Rock, Arkansas. Musically they call eachother soulmates and had the same taste, opinions and goals with music. How was the road towards a record deal? -Ben and I was a lot together after school. Or it wasnt really that much, beacuse my parents was quite conservative and didnt like me spending so much time with a boy. But as much time as I was allowed i spent on music. We were either in his apartment, or home with my parents writing and making music. We played live shows only twice a year. That was beacuse we couldnt afford to rent in musicans more. But we wrote a lot of songs, so we could have as many on our repotar as possible. We did this for seven years, Amy think. Its a lot of horrible stuff there, Amy laughs. A lot of the old songs are really grows. Isnt it fun listening to now? -hehe, no, not yet. it havent been to long, she laughs. -But I was only 15 at the time, give me a couple of years and maybe I can laught at it. Anyways we were recording a couple of songs in Memphis when a producer were standing in the hall listening. He got really impressed, and came in to talk with us. He got some songs with him, and called us a week later saying "Hey, I am going to New York, and wondered if it was ok to bring some of your songs" Ofcourse it was ok, we didnt have a manager or anything, so we felt really lucky. Yeah, do it, both Ben and I said. You know, things like this doesnt happen anymore, it only did in the 60s, except from with us, Amy grins. When was this? -In 2000 What happened next? -He played the songs for a record company and right afterwards they wanted us. Thats when it started. We moved to LA and wrote music for two years. The result is out album Fallen. Black Rock with Lots of Emotions How would you descrive your music? -oh, thats hard. I am inspired by lots of things. i really listen and get inspired by everything I hear. From Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, Bjørk, Janis Joplin, Tori Amos, and Karol King. A good mix, you could say. But I also listen to R&B, Hip Hop, and rap. I love all kinds of music. Everything that makes me feel something. I like that. You write most of the lyrics. What do you write about? -My life, that simple. Everything i write have to do with my own emotions. My own thoughts. I write not to much about real events. Its more the things that happen afterwards. Doesnt that get really personal? -yes, but it feels natural. I have always gotten my emotions down on paper. Thats how i express myself. I have to create something. If I dont then the meaning of my life is gone. Creating is what gives me energy and a meaning. I had a period on two months where i didnt create a single thing. I barely had time to draw on paper. It was just work, work work, day in and day out. Then i had it. i rented a studio with a piano and drew, played and created like crazy. I needed that to refill my batteries. Where do you want to go with Music? -I want to give something to others. I hope they can find a certain confort in the music, and feel A LOT. Noone is alone on this earth. Listen to the lyrics. I have been through a lot, perhaps more that most teenagers. We are all the same. If everyone had let go of their barriers, we would realize that we are all flesh and blood and we are all the same. Say and do things from your heart. Not from your mind: Follow your heart and everything will tunr out ok. Let go, Amy say. Don't think to much about what others say. 08/09/03 Added a new mag scan from Teen People.
