Shaori - Fort Weyr

Bear with me - it's been years since I wrote in HTML so for the moment this page will be minimalistic.

Shaori's physical appearance is loosely modeled on the actress Amanda Peet, while her personality is Marla from Fight Club.

Your average adolescent weyrbrat, Shaori's blessed with a fall of thick dark hair, usually bundled messily into a runnertail, wispy curls straying out of their bindings to frame her temples. Hers is a face marked by strong, almost masculine features: a thin nose set between a pair of prominent cheekbones, and below bold, straight brows. The overall effect is striking rather than frightening, but it's clear the girl is still growing into them. Her face is softened by a pair of thickly fringed grey eyes which, paired with her lanky limbs, give her a gamine appearance which manages to retain some emerging feminine qualities. Her mouth, full and generous, likewise draws attention away from the sharp point of her chin. Tall and skinny, with knobby knees and elbows poking through her clothes, she looks to be somewhere under fifteen turns old, though she's often so grubby it's hard to say for certain.

Shaori's Offcamera Background

Greenflights happen all the time at Fort Weyr, and sometimes babies result from them. Shaori's one of those babies, born to T'shar and Elanna (NPC greenrider) and promptly handed off to the nannies for raising. While her mother acknowledged her and would appear periodically with an absent-mindedly delivered hug or sometimes even a small present (never anything expensive or breakable), her father never so much as greeted her in the living caverns. This would have been tolerable, had it not been for the fact that her elder half-sister Ishara was doted on by T'shar, trotted out in finery at every gather, while Shaori was usually grounded from attending due to punishment for one prank or another. Shaori never expected much else, the nannies treated her capably if not lovingly, and she kept herself amused by tormenting the other children in the lower caverns, never having many friends that she kept for longer than a month or so. Pulling hair and putting tunnelsnakes in someone's bed isn't the best way to keep their affections. Her grandmother was the only one who seemed to consistently notice her, a grumpy old Journeyman Baker named Maiera whose goal was to mold the girl into the image of herself - she was destined to be a baker, or if not, then at least a cook. Life continued in this lonely and monotonous vein for as long as she could remember, until the day that Norri finally took notice of her (it must have been somewhere around her fourteenth turnday) and decided she was old enough to contribute something to the weyr. At the behest of her grandmother she was put to work in the kitchens, a task at which she neither excelled nor cared about, spending more of her time plotting schemes to get out of work than ever helping to get anything done.

Shaori is a born troublemaker, but prefers to act behind the scenes and then gloat inwardly over having put one over on everyone. She doesn't have many friends, she doesn't really trust people because she's not entirely trustworthy. When she does get caught she'll do her time - her style is more sulking than tantrums. However, she hates work utterly (although it's a good bet she'd hate any task she was assigned to - chores = punishment in her book) and is always getting into trouble for one (intentional) mistake after another. Most people at Fort have encountered her handiwork, whether it's grubby fingers in the dinner or the occasional hair left floating in the klah pot. Her name alone seems to be 'bad luck' in the kitchens - mention it and you'll be shushed. In fact, probably the only time you've ever heard her name is when one of the nannies was shouting it, right before you saw her dragged across the inner caverns by her ears.

She's a pouty, difficult, lonely teenager, but not an inherently bad person underneath it all.
