       Rooms By The Sea

       Walls, white and clean
       Furniture, straight and neat
Like pins arranged in a box
The door opens and we see
A sea coming straight up to
The very top step - but not entering
       Waiting quietly for an invitation
Or for someone to come to the door
Perhaps the lady of the house to dangle her toe in the water
       But no one comes
Even the sunlight is well-behaved, shaping itself
By the frame of the door

I wish a fish would flop itself
       Onto the friendly yellow carpet
Lending some scandal to a room
       Begging to be mussed
After all, rooms by the sea were made for adventure
