*Que es El dia de los muertos?* El dia de los muertos is a holiday for the rememberance of the dead.It is celebrated on November 2nd. It is said that angelitos (spirits of dead children) arrive before the adults. This varries in different pueblos.Many parts of North and South America celebrate el dia de los muertos. Some of the United States also know of this holiday and join the festivities. El dia de los muertos is a celebration of loved ones that have passed away. They celebrate el dia de los muertos in a form of a party, or picnic. The picnics are usually held at the graves of their passed friends or relatives. It is a way to mourne their loss and it makes them feel there loved ones are with them. Different types of food are prepared at the picnic, or party. They serve spanish food like rice, beans, cakes, fajitas, and much more. They also decorate the foods by forming them into skeletons and other death related objects. Alot of people wear skeleton costumes to make it more festive. ________________________________________________________________ *La Historia de El dia de los muertos* Dia de los muertos has a very complex history. Observance of the clay varies by region and the degree of urbanization. The original celebration can be traced back to many Mesoamerican native traditions. Some of these traditions include the festivities held during the Aztec month of Miccailhuitontli. This is ritually presented by the "Lady of the Dead" and dedicated to children and the dead. Dia de Los Muertos was originally celebrated at the end of July and the Beginning of August. In the postcorquest era the clay was moved by Spanish priests so that it coincided with the Christian holiday of Dia de Todos Santos (All Hallows Eve). The day is now celebrated during the first two days of November. The tradition calls for the departed children to be remembered on the first day of festivities. This day is called Dia De los Angelitos (The day of the Little Angels). Adults who have passed away are traditionally remembered the second day. On this day, there is a traditional feast in the morning. Also as a tradition, there has always been "Bread of the Dead" with the feast. _______________________________________________________________ *Jose Guadelupe Posada* Jose was born on Feb. 2, 1851 in Los Angeles. He lived in Barrio of San Marcos in Aguascalientes, better known as Hot springs. His parents German Posada who was a banker, and Petra Aguilar who was a homemaker. He had 6 brothers and 2 sisters. As a child he created pottery. His brother Cirilo was very smart and educated him. At the age of 15 Jose became a painter. He then attended school at the Academia de Diloujo se Aguascalientes. At the age of 16 he became an apprentice to Jose Trindad Pedrosa. On September 20, 1875 Posada married Maria de Jesus Vela. In 1876 Jose bought the modest shop from pedroza. As an apprentice he learned to become a publisher, printer, and graphic artist. Jose created labels, diplomas, letterheads, and illustrations. His artwork included National events. Such as Disasters, and Executions. His most famous work involved "Claveras" or skeletons. He was basically the illustrator of death and many of his artwork can be see promoting el dia de los muertos. Jose passed away in 1913. _______________________________________________________________ *Los muertos artesanía tradicional* Folk art is the art of the folk for the beautiful things made at home by the unsophisticated for the neighbors. It was always viewed as something that everyone needed in their daily lives. Folk art is clothing, pottery, decorations for the home, basically anything that can be hand made. The folk art represented in el dia de los muertos are skeletons and skulls. There are also costumes and paintings or drawings. Skeletons basically symobolize the dead therefor they are used during el dia de los muertos because it is defined as "the day of the dead". Food is also looked at as a folk tradition. When preparing the food they shape it and decorate it to look like skeletons.
