.:LLD's Kanji FLASHcards

Welcome to the official site for LLD's FLASHcards , the BEST and MOST COMPLETELY FREE flashcard program on the internet, designed for the study of Japanese.

The name (LLD's FLASHcards) comes from the use of Macromedia's Flash program to create it, and also because my name is Lloyd (with 2 L's, and 1 D).

Yeah yeah, it's not the FLASHiest site on the internet (pun intended), but here you will find my soon-to-be famous 'LLD's FLASHcards.'

Why are they going to be famous? I'll tell you why, because if you go to download.com and search for kanji flash cards, you'll get crap. And if you go to google.com and search for kanji flash cards, you'll get crap. And you know what, some of this crap even thinks it's crappy enough to get you to BUY it. I know this because I've done it. I've seen the horrors of incompetent individuals trying to make a simple little flashcard study program. So, I thought to myself "how hard can it possibly be to make something so simple and do it WELL???"

And that is how LLD's FLASHcards were born. I decided to use flash because, well, I have a flash class at school and I could get extra credit for this. But in addition to that, I have no programming experience outside of c++ programs that run on the command line (like, 'woohoo' or something...) and Flash can create nifty-difty handy-dandy little self-executing .exe files with the press of a button (which is good news for me, seeing as how I am skilled in the art of pressing buttons).

And thus began my 3-day-long quest to make a decent flashcard program began. Voila! Having roughly 10 hours previous experience using Flash MX, I was able to create this, anyone else who has tried to make flashcard programs should be ashamed. You can even edit your own study file!

But alas, like any truly decent program, the depth of insight required and the millions of lines of code have made my team of orangutan programmers weary, and this program is not without it's flaws. But, that just leaves me room to improve for when I decide to make version 2.0 (estimated release date = August 17th, 2045, current project phase = The Pre-Pre-Pre-Pre-Planning Stage).

Here's a quick run-down of everything I have found that I could possibly improve on:

  • Single-file input and filename must be exactly correct. This means if you want to edit what you're studying, you have to name the file properly and exchange another file with it, kinda annoying.
  • Doesn't save your high score.
  • Option buttons don't allow you to click on the actual text, you have to click the little circle to the left (it has something to do with the fact that flash doesn't like dynamic text fields with my buttons, if anyone who knows flash can help, please e-mail me, I'd appreciate it).

And now... screenshots!!!

Note: You will need Japanese fonts (I prefer SimSun) installed on your computer to run this properly. If you have problems, get your Windows disc and go to:

- Start > Control Panel >
Regional and Language Options

- Click the 'Languages' tab

- Tick the box next to:
"Install files for East Asian languages"

Like this program??
Feed a starving college student.

Downloads for the .exe file are coming soon. (promise)

Version Information

Changes in 1.1

  • Added the timer bar, the lights will turn on and go from green to red slowly, indicating that your time is running out. When it runs out, your lose whatever combo multiplier you might have, also, the "Flip" button activates, allowing you to study up if you don't know, and also avoid the now lethal incorrect answer reprecussion (see next change).
  • When you guess incorrectly now, your point total is cut in half. (ouch!)
  • Updated the kanji-picking algorithm, so it is no longer entirely random (it's still mostly random). Now it will be less likely to choose kanji that you have gotten right. The change should be so insignificant that you never would know if I didn't tell you.
  • Changed the flashing "CORRECT!!!" message so it's slightly more readable.
  • Last but not least, TEXT WILL AUTOMATICALLY RESIZE!!! No more 2-kanji limits or run-off text in your options. Your limit is now 5 kanji-compounds, and if you're studying longer than 5 kanji-compounds, you're a little bit beyond flash cards, my friend. (almost everything in the language is less than 4). If you make study files, your definitions and pronunciations can be as long as you like! Well, I guess if you make them too long, the font will shrink to a size too small to read.

And, a screenshot for everyone's pleasure, demonstrating the awesome power of (dramatic music) ... VERSION ONE POINT ONE!!!
