Mike and the Alien

Mike was very excited. He was getting ready for his first day of second grade, and he couldn't stop thinking about what a great day he was going to have. Mike was so excited that he forgot to bring his lunch with him when he left the house. His mom called him from the front door.

"Michael!" she yelled. 'You forgot your lunch!"

"My name's Mike," he said as his mom packed the lunch in his backpack.

Once he got to school, Mike went to his old classroom on accident. He was used to going there every day during first grade. Mike's old teacher, Mrs. Johnson, saw him.

"Hello, Mike!" she said, "I think you're in the wrong classroom." She helped him get to his new room. But it was too late. Mike was already late to his first day of school. When he walked into his new class, the teacher ahd already taken roll.

"Hello," she said, "I'm Mrs. Wolf. You must be Michael."

"My name is Mike," Mike said, but Mrs. Wolf was already walking to a desk.

"You can sit here in the back," Mrs. Wolf said, "by Eric." Mike looked over at Eric. He was grinning at Mike, but Mike couldn't figure out why.

"Try not to be late anymore," Mrs. Wolf said as Mike sat down and got his supplies out.

The class learned about geography for a while. Before Mike even knew it, it was time for recess. All the excited students got up out of their seats and went over to the door so they could leave. When Mike got up, he noticed that he ahd sat on a piece of gum.

Eric giggled.

"Look at your chair next time," he said as the rest of the class went out to recess. Mike tried to get the gum off of his pants. By the time he went out to recess, the rest of the class was picking teams for kickball. Eric a tall kid named Joey were the captains.

Everyone had been picked except for Mike and a girl with pigtails. Eric whispered something into Joey's ear. Joey smiled and said "We want Sally." Mike was picked last. he wasn't very excited anymore. Mike didn't even get to kick the ball before recess was over.

During lunch, MIke sat by himself at his desk. Everyone else ate on the other side of the room. Then Sally, the girl with the pigtails, came over and sat next to him.

"Hi," she said, "my name's Sally. You're Michael, right?"

"You can call me Mike," said Mike.

"Don't worry about Eric," Sally said. "He's just a jerk." Mike felt a little better. He had made a friend.

Mike came to school on time the next day. Mrs. Wolf smiled at him as he walked over to his desk. He remembered to look at his seat. There was a melting candy bar there today. Eric giggled as Mike picked it up and threw it in the garbage.

"It looks like we ahve a new student today," Mrs. Wolf said. Everyone crowded around the door to see who the new student was.

A big, green alien with lots of slimy arms slid into the classroom.

"You can sit in the back, next to Michael," said Mrs. Wolf.

"M-my name is M-m-mike," stammered Mike as the alien slid into the desk next to him. Class started, and Mrs. Wolf taught some mroe geography. Most of the students paid more attention to the alien. Mrs. Wolf asked the alien to tell everyone where he was from, but the alien just slobbered green slime.

When it was time for recess, the alien followed everyone else out tot he kickball field. Joey and Eric picked teams again. They kept picking until only Mike and the alien were left.

"I want the alien," said Eric. The alien slid over to Eric's team.

"No way!" argued Joey. "You can't pick the alien!" Mike was picked last again.

The game started. Joey was about to kick the ball when the alien slid over and grabbed it off the ground with his long arm and ate it.

"Oh man," said Joey.

When it was lunchtime, Sally came over to eat with Mike again. Everyone else sat on the other side of the room, but this time it was because they were afraid of the alien. As Mike and Sally ate their lunches, the alien slobbered more and more. Mrs. Wolf came over.

"Did you bring a lunch?" she asked. The alien just slobbered. Mrs. Wolf shrugged and walked away. Once she walked back to her desk, the alien slid over to Sally and ate her.

"Oh no!" said Mike.

"What's going on, Michael?" asked Mrs. Wolf.

"The alien just ate Sally," said Mike. The alien shook his head

"Oh, don't be silly," said Mrs. Wolf. "Let's not argue about who ate who. Sally must have gone to the bathroom."

Mrs. Wolf looked all over the school for Sally, but she couldn't find her.

"Okay," said Mrs. Wolf to the alien, "where's Sally?" The alien avoided eye contact.

"Well, I'll believe you for now, but no more eating classmates, okay?" The alien burped.

The next morning, Mike didn't want to go tos chool again. He was afraid of the alien. Plus, he didnt' ahve any friends anymore.

"I'm sick," he told his mom. "I can't go to school."

"No you're not," she said. "You're going to school."

"But I don't have any friends!" Mike said.

"Then make some new friends, Michael!" his mom said.

"My name is Mike," Mike said.

All the kids at school were afraid of the alien, but none of their parents believed they were sick, either. Eric was so nervous he forgot to put something on Mike's chair, and Mike was so nervous he forgot to check. Everyone hoped the alien wouldn't come to school. But it did.

"Hello!" Mrs. Wolf said cheerfully as the alien slid throught he doorway. Class soon started. Mrs. Wolf asked the alien what its name was and where it was from, but it just slobbered.

At recess, Joey went and got a new ball from the recess aide.

"Now we can play again," said Joey. But the alien grabbed the ball out of Joey's hands and ate it. so the students decided to play tetherball. Joey was about to serve when the alien grabbed the tetherball and ate it.

"You lousy alien!" said Joey. "Now we can't play anything."

"This stinks," declared Eric.

Mike sat over by everyone else during lucnh. They didn't really mind as long ast he alien stayed on the other side of the room. But the alien started slobbering again.

"Send Michael over there," said Eric. "then maybe it'll eat him instead of one of us."

"M-my n-name is Mike," Mike said.

"Nobody's going to eat anybody else," said Mrs. Wolf. "Go over there and make the alien feel welcome, Michael. I think it needs a friend." Mike slowly walked over to his desk by the alien.

"H-hey," said Mike, "H-how's it g'going?" The alien just slobbered and looked hungrily at Mike.

"Here," said Mike. "Look at this desk. I bet it's tasty." Mike pushed the desk closer to the alien. The alien opened its mouth very wide and ate the desk. It chewed on it for a while, then swallowed it all in one big gulp. But it still wasn't satisfied; it kept slobbering and looking at Mike.

Mike ran to the door, opened it, and ran as fast as he could to the playground. The alien was hot on his heels. Mrs. Wolf and the rest of the class came out to watch. Mike kept running from the alien, but soon he came to a fence.

He was trapped!

Mike looked down and saw a kickball by his feet.

"Here, alien!" yelled Mike, waving the ball at the alien. The alien lunged forward with its long, slimey arms.

But Mike kicked the ball over the fence. The alien climbed over the fence and chased after the bouncing ball, never to be seen again.

"Hurray!" said the class. They didn't have to worry about being eaten anymore.

"I'm sorry I wanted the alien toe at you," said Eric.

"That's okay," said Mike, "I wanted it to eat you, too."

"That was quite a kick," said Joey. "You can be on my kickball team from now on, Michael."

"My friends can call me Mike," said Mike.
