Dear Kay,

Can you believe it,since 2005 when all these legal woes began and we added the Texas section to Making The Wall Transparent(MTWT)website my second oldest daughter Jalisa has followed her sister Quaneeka and graduated. In a few months from now on June 03 and 04, 2008, two more daughters, Tiannia and Ashanti ("Ash") will graduate with honors. Tiannia just emailed me to tell me she made straight A's. Ash also informed me earlier in the week that she made all A's and one B. As you know I reward my daughters for doing well in school. It a good incentive and it makes them push themself to be the very best they can be in school. Well after Ash and Tiannia graduate I'll have just two more daughters to go; lashars and Imani. I'll never claim to be the best father but I'm trying like hell to be. Having to raise my youngest daughter Imani has been a real adventure but I welcome the challenge. Can you imagine all the laughs I get from raising this 2 1/2 year old and all that flows from my being responsible for nurturing her growth and development. Ayanna is a big help in this department and she often pitches in so that Imani receives that balance of love and attention a little girl needs. All of this makes me feel good especially realizing that have done so well despite the obvious obstacles we have been faced with. This is why it means so much to us for me to be out and in a position to communicate regularly with them and make it possible so that anytime they desire they can come visit me during the holidays. If all goes as prayed for at court on April 21, 2008 (which happens to be my god-mothers birthday, bless her soul) maybe during summer vacation they will get to come and visit?

Take care,
Sharif

This is me and my daughter Jalisa,(now 19 yrs. old) who graduated with honors on May 17, 2007. I am very, very, proud of her but was sad that this legal nightmare I am going through almost prevented me from sharing in that very important day of her life.

STORIES OF AMERICA‘S WRONGFULLY CONVICTED
Lakeith Raqib Amir-Sharif

Chasing Justice

"The Dallas courts are one of our nations worst. With "15" exonerations since 2001 Dallas County now leads the nation in DNA exonerations. There are several other suspected cases of wrongful convictions involving DNA that are currently under judicial review, and over 400 other Dallas-area prisoners awaiting approval for DNA testing to possibly prove their innocence. This is truly disgusting and it makes a mockery of the fairness and procedural safegurads found in our lawbooks and the state and U.S. Constitutions. When the Bill of Rights was added to our U.S. Constitution, its authors clearly intended to protect the rights of persons accused of crime. Those simply stated protections have been continuously eroded over the past 200 years. Today, the system's concern has turned from seeking truth to seeking convictions, and the post-conviction remedies available to people are focused on denying any further review, thus condoning and encouraging miscarriages of justice as those taking place in Dallas County and other jurisdictions throughout America. Those of you who believe in the principles of democracy, freedom and fair play will agree that this current state of affairs is completely unacceptable and must be changed. Changes will only come about when people as yourself demand accountability and reforms at every level. Today it is someone else, tomorrow it could be "YOU". "
