SPECIAL MEMO TO FALCON PATROL MEMBERS

SPRING CAMPOREE

April 15-17, 2005

Schiff Scout Reservation

Scouts who recently joined Troop 56 (the Falcon Patrol) are encouraged to participate in the Spring Camporee. This will be a great opportunity to try out “Boy Scout” camping near home and without extensive hiking. Scouts will also be able to complete several requirements for the Tenderfoot badges and may earn one or two merit badges (either/both archaeology and geology badges) . This packet is designed to give some information about your  first scout camping trip. Plans will be discussed at the March 13, April 3 and April 10 Troop Meetings.  ASPL Peter Tomao will be the troop guide for the Falcon Patrol for the camporee.

Scouts are expected to satisfy Tenderfoot requirements 1, 2 and 3 by:

1.     Hiking into the camp site (about ¼ mile) carrying their own gear and supplies on their backs. Scouts who do not have back packs and back packing sleeping bags should get them now. Hiking boots should also be purchased at this time. Scouts will use these supplies at summer camp and for years to come. Information about the necessary gear is attached and will be discussed at the March 13 Troop meeting.

2.     Preparing meals from supplies purchased and brought in as a patrol. (Instructions will be provided at the April 3 Troop meeting).

3.     Pitching and sleeping in a tent with another scout.  Backpacking tents will be provided by the troop. (Tent assignments will be made at the April 10 Troop meeting.)

Parents: You are invited to attend the Camporee with your sons but should plan to sleep in your own tents and to dine with the other adults. We want the scouts to begin to become independent. If a scout’s parents do not plan to attend, please let Mr. Tomao know as soon as possible. Plans will also be discussed at the March 2 and April 6 Troop/Parent Meetings.
