The Official Site of

The Union Grove Mad Hatter’s Society.

This site’s purpose is to inform the general public, especially the students and residents of Union Grove Wisconsin of what our institution is and the services we provide, as well as the various activities that we are involved in.  It will also hopefully grant us a more organized way of communicating within our Institution.

The Mad Hatters thank you for your interest in our site and invite you to offer any feedback or questions you may have.

“If You Ain’t Mad, You Ain’t Glad”

What Exactly Are the Mad Hatters?

To put it simply, the Mad Hatters can best be described as a joint social club/business expenditure.  In Commemoration of services provided back int the 20's and 30's, we supply firsthand goods that are in demand in our area, specifically the area around the High School.

Before you get the wrong idea, we only supply legal merchandise, such as food items and clothing.  We buy in bulk and make a profit, while simultaneously offering our customers lower prices and quality products than they could otherwise find in the area.

This probably makes us retailers, but to call us that would be the most basic description of only one aspect of what we do.  First and foremost, we are a select group of young men and women who seek to enjoy the best life has to offer.  Fine and casual dining (accompanied of course by fine and casual attire), social gatherings of all kinds (parties included of course), creativity (in both the arts and the sciences), engineering (a popular category is potato cannons...), music, monthly poker games, and of course, style.

Now, when you're a Hatter...style is literally personified in our name.  The key accessory of each and every member of our organization is...

You guessed it.  Hats.  No, not baseball caps and visors.  Vintage and retro.  Fedoras, bowlers, pork-pies, Homburg, take your pick.  Members of the Mad Hatters Society can be seen on a daily basis wearing hats like these.  Even frequently being asked by members of the faculty to remove them while in the school building.  To which we immediately comply, if not temporarily.

The idea behind this is more than simple fun and a fasion statement, it also identifies members within the group.  And for our business, this is an absolute necessity.  The sole purpose of our retail business is to help us afford the things that we, as a group, decide to do.  No member receives a dividend of the profits; they all go to paying for the groups activites, as well as further supplying the merchandise.  That way we're all equals and we all reap the benefits.

We dress up.  We wear hats.  We run a business so we can enjoy life as it was meant to be enjoyed; with money, stlye, and friends.

And we greatly encourage any groups outside of their area to begin their own organizations based on the same ideas and principles (or their own) and spread the Society as far as possible.  Who knows?  Maybe there can be a mass meeting for all of us Hatters out there.

The Society's Profile

The Mad Hatters Society was conceptualized in the early fall of  2004 by three guys; Matt, Ben, and Evan.   They'd all worn the hats on their own for various occasions, and based on the idea that it was a style that shouldn't have gone out, and a passion for 1920's and 30's organized "crime".

Due to substantial hikes in the price of food products at the High School, the three of them set about beginning an outside business, offering the students what they craved (Soda and Gum especially) at significantly lower prices than the school was charging.  They scouted around a little, and found a local business where they could purchase such products in bulk at factory-direct prices.  They needed a membership at the business and soon joined with Felicia and Kelli, (who already had a membership).  What else did they need?  Well...a bookkeeper.  Josh Olufs was recruited and his brains and tact are an essential part of the Hatters, though the entire instution is governed by a commission of every single member.

Considering that the members had already been good friends, they considered what they could do with the money they earned from their little retail business.  They quickly jumped on the idea that perhaps the best way to use the money was to spend it on the activities they were already doing together, thus making such activities more affordable.   Steak dinners are much more rewarding when they only cost you half of what they used to.

Soon, a  "business only" associate was recruited (Jimmy) and the work began of competing with the big boys.  Of course, its easier to get past  the gate if you go around it.  So labels were made for the products (the logo at the top of this page) and they built a small market around their friends.  And the products were sold just outside of school property, to avoid legal complications.

And so they continue.  Bigger, Better, and more respected than ever.  They continue to address the issues of the students, and provide that which they desire at prices they are willing to pay.

And of course, the Hatters live the high life resulting from their combined efforts.
