Shining Down From Forever

Kelly Joos

We hiked out on the rocky shore,
the porch light from the house casting our four giant shadows
in front to lead the way.
We sprawled out on the rocks,
shuffling around to find perfect crevices to fit our shoulder blades
and stone pillows for our heads.
Wadded up sweatshirts offered some help in the endeavor.
Water gently lapping on the shore,
we gazed at all of the pinpoints of light
shining down from forever.

Searching for satellites,
sharing deep (and not so deep) thoughts,
stories and dreams, whispers and laughter.
Suddenly, all eight eyes catch a glimpse.
A brilliant blue light streaks across the sky
like an artist's brushstroke
glowing across the black-speckled canvas.
As quickly as it appeared it was gone.
The only trace a memory etched in us all.

Late to the campfire.
Everyone's been sharing favorite memories of the week.
Uncle Tim asks for mine.
I say something about a night on the beach gazing at the stars.
Tim smiles.
You're the fourth person who's said that, he says.

For Sam who was there.
But is now on the other side of the pinpoints of light
shining down from forever.

The shooting star ...
... brilliantly shining.
... glowing handiwork of a master artist.
... whose time with us went by too fast.
... whose moments with us will not be forgotten.
