Topics and Objectives

Overview of Courseware Authoring

  • Examine courseware-authoring applications.
  • Review the steps of the systematic design of instruction model.
  • Apply the steps of the systematic design process to a courseware-authoring plan.

Analysis Phase

  • Identify the general characteristics of a target population in the analysis phase of a courseware-authoring plan.
  • Use a needs assessment in the analysis phase of a courseware-authoring plan.
  • Determine the format (e.g., structured versus self-paced) of the courseware-authoring plan from the analysis phase.

Design Phase

  • Examine the components of a properly written performance objective.
  • Write measurable instructional objectives that meet the needs identified in the analysis phase of the courseware-authoring plan.
  • Design content and course instruction clearly and logically.

Development Phase

  • Apply effective instructional strategies that meet the needs identified in the analysis phase of the courseware-authoring plan.
  • Identify development tools for Web-based courseware-authoring applications.
  • Compare and contrast development tools for Web-based courseware-authoring applications.
  • Select a Web-based courseware-authoring application (e.g., Blackboard®, WebCT®).

Implementation Phase

  • Determine the proper modality of the instructional content.
  • Analyze different instructional functions within the selected courseware.
  • Examine different approaches that stimulate learner interest.
  • Identify different approaches that increase learner engagement.

Assessment Phase

  • Compare and contrast assessment tools in courseware-authoring applications.
  • Compare and contrast traditional assessment with alternative assessment.
