CURR 524 Instructional Design Course Description This course is designed to provide students with the instructional planning skills they need to develop educational courses and materials for adult learners. Students will study the relevant theories of instructional design and apply proven procedures for designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating objectives-based instruction. Specific focus will be given to the creation of materials appropriate for adult learners in classrooms and learning at a distance, including attention to life experiences, entry level skills, motivational needs, and modes of delivery. Topics and Objectives Systematic Approach to Instructional Design · Compare the components of various systems design and models. · Utilize the systematic approach to designing instruction. Needs Assessment · Explain when, where, why, and how a needs assessment is utilized. Instructional Goals · Identify effective goals for an instructional unit. · Write effective goals for an instructional unit. Learners and Contexts · Analyze learner characteristics and describe implications for instructional plans. · Determine entry behaviors and skills for learners. · Identify learning contexts and describe implications for instructional plans. Performance-Based Objectives · Evaluate performance objectives. · Write performance objectives for an instructional unit. Assessment · Evaluate assessment methods based upon performance objectives. · Align assessment with performance objectives. Instructional Strategies and Media Selection · Select appropriate instructional strategies. · Determine appropriate instructional tools and resources. Development of Instructional Materials · Develop instructional plans that are aligned with the performance objectives. Formative Evaluation and Revision · Explain when, where, why, and how formative evaluations of instructional materials and learner outcomes are utilized. · Recommend instructional improvements and revisions based upon evaluation results. Implementation · Analyze the factors that impact successful implementation. Summative Evaluation · Explain when, where, why, and how summative evaluations of instructional materials and learner outcomes are utilized. · Support the need for using a systematic approach to instructional design. |
