The Canine Partners organisation was started up to make disabled people lives a lot easier. They do so by giving them a dog that would suit them and there needs.
Dogs of the Disabled was started up by a disabled woman, Frances Hay, in 1986. She trained her own dog to assist her in some tasks she found difficult to do on her own.
Dog AID (Assistance in Disability) was developed from the idea from an American man, who was disabled himself, and had trained his own dog to help him with tasks. Dog AID was founded by him to do this. They decided to introduce this new idea into UK. With alot of help from Dolores Palmer, a pilot scheme was set up in England 1991. Over 30 dogs have achieved the full Assistance Dog name and many others have got the Good Companion certificate.
One of the first Assistance dogs was trained in 1976. In 1998 Prison PUP Partnership was started up, in America, by Sister Pauline Quinn. This led on to the charity NEADS, which supplies advanced training for assistance dogs, and good partnership between the dogs and their owners.
Val Strong started her own dog training club while she was having a break in her own career in Medical science in order to follow her interest in dogs and dog training. When she started her dog training school, she found that two of her clients were disabled and in wheelchairs. One day Val had the idea that she could help these two clients be more independent by starting to train their dogs to do some simple tasks. Soon enough these dogs started to make their owners lives a lot easier. After she had trained the dogs she came up with the name Support Dogs and started her own organisation.
In 1994 training of dogs to assist people with epilepsy began. This came about because someone came forward to Support Dogs and asked if dogs trained for this purpose were available. Support Dogs and the client both set about training a dog together that would be able to sense when she was about to have a seizure. Three months later the dog could tell 30 seconds beforehand when the owner was about to have a seizure. This was when Seizure Dogs were invented.
This organisation has became well known around the world.
