"JR, you might not understand, but a long, long time ago, Grandma's Daddy didn't like me much. But I loved her with all my heart." An old fragile Justin Timberlake told his grandson, JR, short for Justin Randall.
His grandson had the Timberlake smile, nose, eyebrows, eyes, curls... the whole package. JR turned his blue eyes to his Grandfather. "Why didn't he like you?" He asked curiously.
"He saw me as his big, bad pop star that would steal your Grandma away and only end up breaking her heart." Justin said, sighing, thinking about all the battles that went on between himself and Mary's father. "That was the last thing I'd ever do."
"One day, we decided we'd run away together, get married in the first town we came to and live forever together. I went out to meet her, by our tree, but instead of her, I found this." Justin said, pulling a note out of his coat pocket.
He handed it to JR and he read it to himself.
"If you get there before I do, don't give up on me. I'll meet you when my chores are through. I don't know how long I'll be, but I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see. And between now and then, till I see you again, I'll be loving you. Love, me." Justin said out loud, knowing it by heart.
"You and Grammy really loved each other back then huh?" JR said and Justin smiled, ruffling his curls.
"We loved each other then and we love each other now. Come on, let's get going. There'll leave us behind." Justin said, standing up with the help of his cane. It was hard to believe that his old bones danced away every night for months on end for over six years.
They walked into church not long later and JR and Justin stopped to pray, Mary right beside Justin. Next thing either of them knew, Mary was on the floor.
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my fifteen years
Mary had had a heart attack in the middle of church that Sunday. JR was only 15 and he had never seen Justin cry. They were at Mary's funeral when he saw his Grandpa cry for the very first time. He watched as his Grandpa knelt in front of Mary, and kiss his Grandma's headstone and he watched him whisper something to it. JR knew what those words were already from where he was standing.
If you get there before I do
"If you get there before I do, don't give up on me. I'll meet you when my chores are done. I don't know how long I'll be, but I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see. And between now and then, till I see you again. I'll be loving you. Love, me." Justin whispered quietly to his dead wife, lover and best friend of nearly 50 years. "I love you Mary." He said and stood up slowly to see JR standing there with his hand out for his Grandpa to take.
Justin smiled at him gratefully and took his hand, walking back to JR's parents who were waiting for them by the car.
