He'll Never Be
He'll Never Be

"Hey man, did you hear?"

"Hear what?" He asked and JC leaned in closer to him.

"Em's got a new man." He told him.

"Who?" He asked and JC looked uneasy.

"Uh, Justin. And um, he says they're pretty happy."

I heard you found yourself a new man
And you say you're happy as can be

He nodded and turned his head towards the club entrance and there she was, on Justin's arm. People greeted them and she kept that grin on her face.

No one can play the game like you can
But does he give you everything you need

"Hey guys!" Emily said in her cheerful voice and her green eyes fell on him. "Lance."

"Emily." He said, nodding at her.

"Hey man. Are you, um, okay with this?" Justin asked him and Lance shrugged.

"What ever, as long as someone's giving her what she needs, I don't really care." Lance said and Emily's eyes looked downward.

But in good time
You're gonna find
Your eyes were closed
And your heart was blind
Now it's too late to change your fate
Cause there's no way he'll ever take my place

"Lance... dance with me? For old times sake and all." Emily said a little while later and Lance shrugged as he stood up.

"Sure, why not." He said and let her lead them out to the dance floor. "He'll never be..." by 98 degrees was playing and he smirked as they started moving together. "How appropriate."

"What?" Emily asked and he leaned in to talk in her ear.

"Listen to the song." He told her and they danced the rest of the song in silence.

He'll never be
What I used to be to you
So if you wanna play the fool
Then make that move
And do what you gotta do

They had been together for nearly three years when she left him for reasons unknown to him. Lance thought...no, he knew everything was perfect between them. Lance figured that scared her. He knows she'll never find a heart half as true as his. Emily knew it too. Lance figured it'd only be a matter of time before she sees Justin would never be what he was to her.

You'll never find
A heart that is half as true
I guess you really never knew
But soon you'll see
That he'll never be
What I used to be to you

Emily watched as Lance disappeared into the crowd. She saw him dancing with a pretty redhead and even though she was on Justin's arm, she longed to be out there with him.

Justin saw the look on her face and he leaned in to kiss her neck, just under her ear. "Are you okay Em?" He asked.

Emily looked up at him, grinning. "Sure. Just a bit tired."

Justin smiled down at her and leaned in to kiss her. *You don't even know how I feel Justin.* She thought as she returned the kiss, almost sadly.

Does he even have a notion
Of what you really feel inside
Are you going through the motions
Livin' a lie like you're satisfied

Later that night, or morning, Emily laid in bed waiting for Justin, wide awake. Justin crawled into bed beside her and pulled her too him, kissing her neck.

*This ain't right and you know it!* Her subconscious yelled at her but she ignored it as she kissed him.

*It's not the same.*

But late at night
You realize
There's somethin' tellin' you it just ain't right
It's not the same
Am I to blame

Her body moved with his but her mind was elsewhere. Her mind was back to the last time she was with Lance. *Lance.* She thought and opened her mouth. "Lance.." She whispered and Justin stopped, staring down at her.

"What was that?" Justin asked her and she snapped out of whatever daze she had been in.

And when you're with him
Do You call my name

"What was what?" Emily asked and he moved away from her.

"You said Lance."

"No, I didn't. Why would I?" She asked, turning to look at him and he glared at her.

"You tell me." Justin said before getting out of bed.

He'll never be
What I used to be to you
So if you wanna play the fool
Then make that move
And do what you gotta do

"I'm sorry Justin but this was a mistake from day one." Emily said the next morning as he ate his cereal.

"Last night was proof." Justin said, agreeing with her.

"I'll be out by the time you get back from recording." Emily told him and kissed his cheek lightly before walking out of the kitchen and upstairs to pack.

You'll never find
A heart that is half as true
I guess you really never knew
But soon you'll see
That he'll never be
What I used to be to you

"What are you doing here?" Lance asked later on that day when he walked into his living room to find Emily sitting on his couch.

"I'm sorry." She said, looking up at him and he shook his head.

"I've never been happier Emily. It was right for us to break up." Lance told her and her eyes teared up.

"But.."

"I just want to know what you were thinking of when you ended things? I gave you all of my love Em, all of it. It was a game wasn't it? Everything's the same to you. You break up with me, get with my best friend then dump him and try to get back in with me. One big ol' game."

I gave you all my love
What were you thinking of
Guess it was just a game
It's all the same to you

"That's not how it was!" Emily said, standing up so she was more or less at Lance's eye level. "I just wanna try again. I threw everything away for something stupid Lance. Please, can't we try again?"

"It's too late to try again. Our story is finished Emily. I've moved on..." Lance said. Just as he said that, the same redhead from the club walked into the living room.

"Um, hi." She said, flashing a perfect smile as she walked up to Lance's side and Emily started to cry.

Emily tore her eyes from her to look at Lance. "I'm sorry." She said again and walked out of his house and into her car.

Too late to try again
This story's at an end
