Puente
@ CPH
Puente's
main impact at Castle Park High is mainly to focus on the students
English and writing
skills. Not only does the program
help
ALL minorities, not just mexicans get into a four year
college, but the program introduces
different colleges and universities, located in
Southern
California, to the students
at
CPH. The second year in the program, as tenth graders, they begin
to realize ways they can give
back
to the community. Also, during their tenth grade year the main
focus is to point out to them
that
they should get a head start in looking at colleges/universities
and applying for scholarships
to help
them with their college tuition in the future, as well.
Goal: To increase the number
of educationally disadvantaged students who:
* enroll in four-year colleges and universities
* earn college degrees
* return to the community as mentors and leaders of future generations
Mentoring:
What do Puente mentors
do?
* introduce students to careers and workplaces
* share their strategies for overcoming obstacles
* show by example that academic and career goals can be met
* provide resources for student writing assignments about culture and community
"Puente's
message is simple, direct, and insistent: Go to college."
