Surrealism

Honors English 290, Comic Surrealism, was a course I took to fulfill requirements for both English credits and credits for the Honors College. Never had I thought that surrealism could raise such a debate....Actually, I did not even know what it was!

Through this course, I learned the meaning of surrealism and how it is used in art and literature. Surrealism opposes the "real world." Surrealist artists and authors are constantly finding ways to shock their audience, since shock value is a key element of surrealism. The events and objects that one finds in surrealist art and literature are nothing of the ordinary; on the contrary, they are quite extraordinary. Many times they are subconscious themes or ideas that are portrayed through dream-like events or objects that stun the audience and make them think. Throughout the course, we looked at works of art and read literary works that helped define and sculpture our outlook on surrealism. To view some of this art and to receive my take on the literature, feel free to enter the page linking to each. I hope you enjoy what you see and remember, surrealism is meant to be taken at face value....do not read into it, or you may lose the sense of what surrealism is all about!
