The United Nations

Roosevelt got what he wanted and the Soviet Union agreed to join the United Nations along with the U.S. and fifty other countries in June of 1945. The United Nations charter stated that the organization was going to: “Save succeeding generations from the scourge of the war.” The United nations consisted of a large body called the General Assembly, in which they were to discuss worldwide topics, approvement of new members, agreements, and recommendations. The United Nations also included a second group of members called the Security Council. They are in charge of emergency action, peace keeping, and also the investigation of disputes. The only permanent members of the United Nations included: • Britain • China • France • Soviet Union • United States Six other countries were elected for two year terms. In 1948, the United Nations adopted the universal Declaration of Human Rights. This would preserve the basic rights and freedoms of any oppressed individuals. The United Nations also set up more agency’s to “Help coordinate worldwide efforts to battle disease, feed the hungry, and also to improve literacy.”
