World War II
1939-1945
World War II was the greatest conflict in the history of mankind. It is estimated
by historians that almost 60 million people lost their lives during the six year span of
time, making it the bloodiest period in history. This web page is dedicated to all of those
who fought for their countries and especially to those who paid the ultimate price for it.
"The world must know what happened, and never forget."
-General Dwight D. Eisenhower

The picture in the background is the famous photo of six marines raising the American
flag atop Mt. Suribachi on February 23, 1945 during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The photo
was taken by Joe Rosenthal. The six marines* who raised the flag were Ira Hayes,
Franklin Sously, John Bradley, Harlon Block, Michael Strank, and Rene Gagnon. Out
of the six, only 3 were destined to leave the island. Sously, Block, and Strank were
all killed in later fighting on the island; "Doc" Bradley was badly wounded but
managed to survive the 36 day battle along with Ira Hayes and Rene Gagnon.
* John Bradley was actually a Navy corpsman (medic) but he trained with, fought with, and was equipped as a marine.
