Horses are measured in a form or measurement called a "hand" each hand equals 4inches and they are measured from the ground to the withers. The withers are the spot on the horse's neck where the mane ends.The withers are shown on the baby horse, or foal straight up from the front legs. Really, all the withers are, are a fancy horse term for the shoulder blade.

If rattlesnakes or other venomous snakes live in your area, your horse could be at risk for snakebite.The good news is most horses that are bitten by a venomous snake are lucky, in that, no venom makes it's way into the bloodstream. The bad news is, that up to a fourth of those envenomated horses die, depending on the kind of snake. If you're riding and your horse gets bitten then, you'll know it. But if he's in the pasture you may not. Here are some things to do, if yu suspect a snake bitten horse:
1.) look for signs - signs inclue severe swelling and soreness, your horse may limp on a leg if he is bitten there. 2.)call your vet immediateley - activity will increase your horse's blood circulation, cause venom to spread more quickly. So call the vet as soon as posslibe.3.)Avoid folk remidies - do not put heat or ice on the wound, applying heat will increse the blood circulation, and ice had been proved to be no help but to ruin the tissue instead.4.)if you were riding while your horse was bitten, try to identify markings on the snake if you see it so you can explain the snake to your vet.:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
