Upon hearing the name Count Dracula, we immediately think of a frightening yet handsome male with ghost white complexion, gothic clothing and an irrepressible fear of daylight. Chances are, the above description matches at least one person you know, perhaps even yourself. For despite being a creature of darkness and evil, the vampire is seen as the ultimate icon, the ideal role model for humankind. So it’s no surprise that so many people calling themselves Goth or Gothic, opt for a vampire-like appearance. Count Dracula, as with all vampires is an anti-hero, we despise him because he represents the evil, wretched side of humanity, yet another side of us adores him, because the vampire is so powerful, so free to do what he wants. He doesn’t have to worry about work, or any other of the trivial problems we encounter in our day-to-day existence. Unlike most creatures of the supernatural, which include zombie’s ghosts and goblins, the vampire is adored, worshipped even. What is so tempting about becoming a walking corpse? Or a lonely ghost wondering through corridors? Both existences sound pretty hopeless and miserable, especially when compared to that of a vampire. Count Dracula made vampires appear exciting, whereas previously to Bram Stokers novel, vampires were more often than not gruesome and pitiful creatures, certainly not something you’d look up to.> Dracula is idolised by men for his destructive power and admired by women for his alluring charms Of course even Dracula has points of weakness; he is susceptible to crosses, holy water and sunlight, still these weaknesses do not seem of importance to us as they are overshadowed by his incredible strengths. Dracula can transform into a bat or a wolf, he can hypnotise women at his will, his physical strength is way beyond that of an ordinary man and his whole aura reeks of frightening power, style, and sexual lure. In case that isn’t enough to have you green with envy, he can potentially live forever. Never has evil appeared in such a dazzling package.

Some people will do anything to look that little bit more like a vampire.

With the aid of modern surgical techniques, fantasy has become a disturbing reality as people from all over the world are paying vast amounts of money to have authentic vampire fangs implanted . Unsurprisingly, merely reassembling a vampire isn’t enough for some. Blood drinking is alarmingly popular, with over 700 people in the US alone claiming to be genuine vampires. The simple fact that half or even all of those 700 people could be lying doesn’t make the figure any less disturbing. The practice of blood drinking is big business in Los Angeles, where exclusive ‘Vampire clubs’ are open nightly, so that local vamps can go out for a bite to eat (please excuse the pun) and enjoy the nightlife with like-minded individuals. Similar clubs exist in Germany, France, and even Japan where the whole vampire subculture is much more secretive and underground than it is in LA. Modern vampires refer to themselves as 'Self -made vampires''. They view the drinking of blood as bonding with another person, an intimate interaction between two people that is ultimately harmless providing a sensible amount of blood is taken, though some claim to drink over a cup full each session.

As with Count Dracula, and most other forms of vampire, the blood is drawn from the neck, which is punctured by the vampire’s fangs and drank directly from the wound. This fascination with blood derives from ancient Babylonion times when blood , the life giving liquid, was regularly drunk as part of ritual. Aztecs poured blood into the mouths of their idols, and in India, Rajahs drank blood from severed heads.Greeks and Romans held the same fascination towards blood, offering it to the Gods in the form of sacrifices.Early Australian tribes used to treat the wounded or sick by opening the veins of their friends, collecting the blood in a bowl and feeding this to the sick person in its raw state, showing even then that blood was seen as a life restorer which is exactly how vampires see it. Blood has a strong link with sexuality, it has long been recognised that there is a definite connection between the fascination with blood and sexual excitement, stemmed from the belief that fear often signifies repressed sexual wishes. As much as we may hate to admit it, sexual attraction makes up a large part of the vampires appeal. take this for example.......

Bela Lugosi, the hungarian actor who portrayed Count Dracula in the 1930s received a staggering amount of fan mail from women of all ages pouring their hearts out on how much they adored him, of course they were not reffering to Lugosi himself, but to his un-dead alter ego.The tall, dark, sinister, stunningly handsome Count. If that isnt enough to flatter the hollywood legend, the English group Bauhaus even released a song about him called 'Bela Lugosi's dead'' which quite rightly is said to have sparked the whole goth rock music scene.

Personally, I cannot see a time when the ghost of Dracula looming over us is exorcised. The reason he has lasted so long is partly due to the media. I can easily think up thousands of Dracula related products, including Films, computer-games, comics and cheap Halloween costumes made to reassemble the gothic style of Dracula’s clothing. There is no other vampire to match him let alone better him in the popularity stakes. Count Dracula is the personification of our dark side, and as long as that dark side remains, there is no hope of him and his un-dead minions ever leaving the human mind.

Sleep tight, and remember to hold the covers to your neck.
