There are two key stages for English: Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4

Key Stage 3
Key Stage 4

Students from year 7-9 Start off with Key Stage 3. They are tiaught the basics of English Landuage and English Literature.

Every year new students come to Breeze Hill from overseas. They mostly come from Pakistan or Bangladesh. If they have little or no English on arrival, we provide a special programme of intensive English lessons to enable them to take part in mainstream lessons. These take place in Room 9. We try to provide one hour a day for these students.

Pupils in years 10 and 11 follow the Northern Examination and Assessment Board course. This is divided into 2 subjects:
  • English Language
  • English Literature

Both subjects are divided into two levels: Higher, for grades A* to D and Foundation, for grades C to G.

The exam board requirements are changing. Further information is available from the department.

Coursework:
Oral and written coursework is undertaken during years 10+11 pupils must show that they can write in a variety of styles and so must produce evidence of personal, creative writing, either real or imaginary. They must be able to show that they can respond to novels, plays and some early literature as well as show the ability to research, draft and revise work. Coursework must include the reading and study of novels, plays and poetry as well as the study of early literature.
