Man That Boy Could Be

Dale Earnhardt Day, Mooresville North Carolina. 2003

They stood in line all day just to get into the autograph line to say a few words. They had tried to get in backstage and were shocked when they were denied.

He was a boy, she was a girl

Can I make it anymore obvious?

He was a punk, she did ballet

What more can I say?

He wanted her, she'd never tell

secretly she wanted him as well.

But all of her friends stuck up there nose

they had a problem with his baggy clothes.

He was a skater boy, she said see ya later boy

He wasn't good enough for her

She had a pretty face, but her head was up in space

she needed to come back down to earth

She approached the table “Dale, wow, hi it’s been so long.”

Dale looked at her, “Uh, hi. Did you have something you wanted signed?”

“Dale it’s me Sue, from school.”

He looked at her, “Oh yeah, hi. Didn’t recognize you, sorry.” He looked at the 2 kids at her feet. “Wow, it has been a while. So you married?”

“Oh, no. Divorced and single.” she smiled.

“Oh, I hate to do this but we have to keep the line moving.”

“Sure, I will catch up to you in a little, I am going to check out the band.”

“Great, have fun.” he said already signing the next photo being slid in front of him.

five years from now, she sits at home

feeding the baby

she's all alone

she turns on tv

guess who she sees

skater boy rockin' up MTV.

she calls up her friends, they already know

and they've all got tickets to see his show

she tags along and stands in the crowd

looks up at the man that she turned down.

He walked out on to the stage to a thunderous applause. He spent the next few minutes thanking the crowd for their dedication to his father, he talked about the future of the Legacy program, the day’s festivities and introduced the band.

He was a skater boy, she said see ya later boy

he wasn't good enough for her

now he's a super star

slamin' on his guitar

does your pretty face see what he's worth?

As he left the stage he was met by his friends and they headed back inside. Dale heard a voice.

“Dale. Oh, Dale.”

“Oh lord,” he muttered. His friends looked on.

“Sue, hey having fun?” he asked through the chain linked fence.

“Yeah, so what are you doing later?”

His friends snickered.

sorry girl but you missed out

well tuff luck that boys mine now

we are more than just good friends

this is how the story ends

He felt arms going around his waist and could tell by the small frame behind him who it was. “Hey babe” he said laying a kiss on her forehead. “Marie, this is Sue, an old, well we went to school together. Sue this is my girlfriend Marie.”

“Nice to meet you.” Marie said.

“Oh, same here.” Sue said coldly.

too bad that you couldn't see

see that man that boy could be

there is more that meets the eye

I see the soul that is inside

Dale laughed to himself, “You know I just remembered something from school.”

“Oh.” Sue’s eyes lit up.

“Yeah, man I had the biggest crush on you. Must have asked you out at least a dozen times.”

“Yeah, I know.”

Dale looked at her, “Yeah , I figured you remembered that. You turned me down every single time.”

He's just a boy, and i'm just a girl

can I make it anymore obvious?

we are in love, haven't you heard

how we rock each others world

“You know Marie and I have been together for about 3 years now. Amazing how some things can seem like the end of the world when you are young.” He looked at Marie, “Then you grow up and realize how everything works out just the way it should.” He kissed the love of his life. “It was good seeing you again Sue.” They walked away leaving her standing there all alone.

I'm with the skater boy, I said see ya later boy

i'll be back stage after the show

i'll be at a studio

singing the song we wrote

about a girl you used to know

“What was that all about?” Marie asked as they left.

“Just a girl I use to know.”
