Origin

Alexis Embers was born four years after her older brother, Robert Embers--a popular photographer (rivaling Jimmy Olsen) at The Daily Planet. Her greatest passion has been journalism, after reading several articles written by Benjamin Thomas (see Margie's Profile). However, growing up, she found herself to be quite the beautiful gem she was born as while in front of the camera.

By the time she was thirteen, she sent sample photos of herself (taken by Robert) to "Glammer Girl Magazine", in hopes to be on the cover. Unfortunately, the magazine didn't accept photos of underage girls, but kept Alexis in mind. During this time, of course, Alexis sought after a well-paying, part-time job position at The Daily Planet, working alongside her brother as a delivery girl. It wasn't much of a job, but at least she got to experience the workforce at a young age.

One Saturday on the job, Robert and Alexis experienced an intense tragedy, when her idol and favorite reporter, Benjamin Thomas, was murdered at the front of the D.P. headquarters. Although neither of them witnessed the event, there was enough attention surrounding the area for them to find out how and why it happened. It angered Alexis to know that the mob was behind it, especially considering the former D.P. boss, Morgan Edge, was working with them before being exposed by Thomas and put out of a job.

Alexis did her best to put this tragic event behind her, but the memory of it all had stayed with her up until the time she was old enough to reconsider that opportunity at GGM. Again, she sent the best photos of herself to them, and they happily accepted her into their magazine. However, Alexis didn't make it as far as the front page (more like "Page 27"). This only encouraged her to try harder, sending more photos each year that got just as incredible and "glammer-ous" as the one that made the front page.

During this time, Alexis maintained her part-time job at The Daily Planet, being "promoted" from delivery girl to reporter by the age of twenty-five. As a bonus, she got to work with one of the "new recruits", a 19-year-old cub reporter named Sean Thomas (son of Benjamin Thomas). Alexis welcomed this opportunity literally with open arms, considering how it not only made her feel a lot less of a rookie than she had upon first coming into The Daily Planet, it also was the perfect chance to work with the son of her idol. It had also given her the chance to get some input on her GGM photos from someone other than her own brother (who praised them, even though he was the one who took them).

Although Sean was her prized pupil, Alexis didn't appreciate the gung-ho attitude displayed by his older sister, Margie, who spent more time working solo and alienated from her fellow employees that she was almost like a ghost at the Planet. There were often times when Alexis wished "rookies" like Margie followed the examples of other up-and-coming reporters like Clark Kent and Lois Lane--two employees who had been working at the Planet as reporters longer than she had.

As news began spreading around Metropolis of vigilantes moving in and taking the law into their own hands, Alexis had taken this opportunity to lead Sean into more hard-hitting investigations. Their work took them into the criminal underworld of Metropolis, with men just as dangerous as Morgan Edge working in secret operations. These operations were only secret for so long, as a vigilante gang known as "The Metros" came into the picture, working above the law and taking down criminals in a way that Alexis deemed "unjustified".

After doing some research on the crimes that the Metros solved on their own terms, Alexis discovered a name: Summer Thomas (see her profile). Undoubtedly related to Benjamin and Sean, Alexis could only pinpoint this "Metro" gimmick of Summer's to Benjamin's murder. And the fact of how much it worried Sean made her feel somewhat angry that she would put her life on the line like that. It was enough to make her wish there were some way he could prevent vigilantes like Summer Thomas from causing more chaos on the streets than there already was.

It seemed like Alexis's wish came true a couple of years later, when she and Robert visited her grandmother's house, shortly after she passed on. While sorting through her belongings, she stumbled across an unusual white box with strange markings on it, containing a beautiful choker with a blue stone attached. Upon contact a sudden surge of power flowed through her. While wearing the choker, believing it to be exactly what she needed to finally get herself on the cover of GGM Magazine, Alexis discovered weird things happening all around, from her hands catching on fire (but not hurting or burning her in any way) to hovering seven feet off the floor. It was by then that she realized this was no ordinary choker she was wearing.

Within due time, she got the hang of having these things happen to her, as well as healing faster than the average person (she cut herself with a knife by accident and her wound heal within a few seconds). And she eventually realized that she had something here that would help people (or prevent them from taking the law into their own hands). With the sudden arrival of Metropolis's greatest hero, Superman, and the crime rate lowered, Alexis was heavily inspired to become something close to him.

To fulfill her calling, Alexis created the right kind of outfit--a flame resistant one with durable fabric--using her imagination and sewing machine. It didn't take her very long to come up with a suitable costume, complete with a mask to conceal her secret identity. The only one whom it wasn't much of a secret to was Robert, who was alerted of the stone's powers while handling a photoshoot with Alexis one evening. It was even him who encouraged her to take on the name of "Safire", since the stone and its powers matched with her sapphire eyes. That, and she also wore just sapphire-colored clothes most her life.

This event could not have come at a better time, as more superheroes (some she approved of, others she didn't so well) arrived and formed a new team known as "The Justice League". It was a calling a lot higher than GGM Magazine that Alexis was willing to go after, just as soon as she got full control of her new abilities. And the best field test she could think of was the Metros. However, they suddenly became a lot difficult to find, after the arrival of the Justice League (as well as a team of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles").
