Cape Foundation Publications, along with our talented group of consultants,
tried to answer relevant writing questions from our website readers. Simply
email a question and, if selected, our response will be listed below.
Question:
Do you accept submissions or queries from writers searching for a publisher?
Answer:
Sorry, we don’t have the funds or paid staff to consider any unsolicited
proposals or manuscripts for publication. As a “not for profit” publisher,
we can only consider one or two titles per year, provided the writer is
recommended by a local colleague and has the financial backing to defray all
publishing costs. There are, however, literally thousands of small
publishers interested in unknown or first time writers. The Writers
Market is a great start in finding an appropriate publisher or agent to
review your submission.
Question:
Should an unknown writer with a completed manuscript have an agent?
Answer:
An agent
can be an enormous help as an introduction to many reputable publishers, who
otherwise wouldn’t be interested in any unsolicited manuscripts. Since,
however, agents are not licensed or certified, their credentials and talents
range from terrible to outstanding. So make certain you find a good one by
asking colleagues, exploring well-established publishing and marketing
books, and/or attending writers’ seminars and workshops. Here is an
important caution, don’t ever hire an agent who wants an up-front fee of
some kind. All reputable agents are paid solely on a percentage of book
sales once you are published. |
