Larry Wonderling’s background is both remarkable and inspirational to those convinced their "ladder to the stars" contains only a couple of rungs. Born into a dysfunctional family, Larry began his life’s struggle with exceptionally mediocre mental and physical abilities. In grammar school he was barely a C student, flabby, uncoordinated and routinely chosen last in team sports. During his first week in high school his valued red cap was snatched from his head by a school bully. He handled the theft and humiliation by tearfully going to the principal.

By the end of his first year in high school, he was known as a wimp, easily intimidated by other kids. He wasn’t even a brainy wimp. His grades were still barely Cs.  Just what changed the course of his life is unclear. It’s certain, however, his remarkable resilience had little to do with a supportive home environment, natural physical and mental abilities or magic.

At age 76, Larry Wonderling attributes whatever happened after the 9th grade to “volition,” a term rarely offered as the singular reason for meteoric physical and mental changes as evidenced below:

  • High school senior class president.
  • At age 19, San Quentin Prison Correctional Officer.
  • College athletic scholarships.
  • High school and college football Halls of Fame.
  • Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
  • Korean War veteran.
  • National SCCA race car driver.
  • As test driver for an attorney firm, duplicated a fatal crash, resulting in winning the first million dollar lawsuit against General Motors.
  • Founder of Cape Foundation, Inc.
  • Founder of the first Ski Patrol in Afghanistan.
  • Clinical and Forensic Psychologist.
  • International cross-cultural consultant to Peace Corps, World Education, Foreign Service, etc.
  • Consultant to criminal justice agencies, including California Department of Corrections, Sacramento Probation Department, San Francisco Police Department, etc.
  • Since retiring in 1995, he has published four books as diverse as his background:

1997:  SEDUCTIVE ILLUSIONS, How to Resist the Lure of Society’s Smoke and Mirrors. To preserve one’s individuality and grasp of reality in a society of smoke and mirrors.

2001: SAN FRANCISCO TENDERLOIN, Heroes, Demons, Angels and Other True Stories.  The author’s unorthodox efforts to help social misfits in a notorious area of San Francisco.

2003: THE ULTIMATE EVIL. A mystery novel about eight inexplicable and unrelated deaths in San Francisco on the same day.

2006: MINDING YOUR MATTER, A breakthrough health and fitness book especially for seniors.
