CANADIENS GET SHOTOUT!

The coaches and players may change from year to year, but it seems like the New Jersey Devils always wind up looking like Stanley Cup contenders, and that's largely because of the man between the pipes.

Martin Brodeur made 28 saves to post his 87th career shutout and Brian Gionta scored two goals to lead the Devils to a 3-0 win Sunday over the Montreal Canadiens.

It was the first time this season Montreal has been shut out.

CARBONNEAU LEADS THE WAY

First-year coaches in the NHL don’t come any better than Guy Carbonneau. Just past the one-quarter mark of the 2006-07 schedule, no new coach has graded higher than Carbonneau this season.

Among the eight coaches to have made their debut behind a new bench to start the season, Carbonneau is the leader of the pack with a 14-6-3 mark and a .673 winning percentage after 23 games. Carbo’s next closest rival is Ted Nolan, who has drawn rave reviews of his own on Long Island.
