Red and
Green Lanterns
Ross H.L. Bowen

A little child lay on his deathbed
And his faith was racked with pain.
His Dad was called to go to Hinton
For to run and eastbound train.

He told his wife, "You know I love you...
And I want to be with you.
But I'm called to go to Hinton,
And pull Eastbound Number Two.

"I'll leave two lights
For when I'm passing --
Place 'em where
They may be seen

If Billy's dead,
Then show the red one,
If he's better,
Show the green."

As I left, he looked so peaked,
Looked as if his time was near.
"If there's a God up there in Heaven,
Let me keep my son so dear."

He was roaring up the mountain...
On his engine was a strain
He was rolling 'cross the trestle
with one hundred cars of train.
![]()
One passing glance his only chance --
But the signal light was seen
A silent prayer he uttered there
"Thank you, Lord, that light was green!"
