Presents

Presents

Ross H.L. Bowen

It happened one December,
Nearly thirteen years ago,
My friends came over to my house
To watch a picture show.

When the program was over,
And they packed up to leave,
I came up with a parting line
On that Christmas Eve.

"May you get all you want,
And want all you get.
  From cowboy boots to clothing,
Perhaps a TV set.

May you get all you want,
And be happy as can be.
Opening your presents
      Beside the Christmas Tree."

Then when the boys had left for home
My father came to say
 "Son you just don't understand
Why there's a Christmas Day.

"Our Saviour came to Bethlehem
To bring peace to the earth.
And Christmas is the day now
We celebrate His birth.

It's not how many presents,
Or how much each one cost.
It's caring that souls are saved
And redeem the ones who're lost.

"Every little gift helps open the door,
For us to explain Christmas Day.
They're symbols to remind us
Just how much we're loved, they say.

"So He left His home above.
No other gift can be as great.
As the only one He gave,
For all who believe in Him are saved .

When Dad had finished talking
I knew that I was wrong.
The joy of Christmas comes to me
Simply with a song
So even if the number of your gifts
Is only one or two
Then remember what my father said --
It is still just as true!

"If I don't get any presents,
I still got all I need
Words in the Holy Bible
 I lovingly will heed.

Jesus came and did His part
In God's Salvation Plan.
Now it's up to me to share
This truth with all I can."

When I stand before my Savior
       On our Judgment Day,
Well Done, my faithful servant
Are the words I'll hear Him say!
