Van Halen - Greensboro, NC 29.09.2007 (2nd Reunion Tour show)

notes from the taper/uploader !

Howdy everybody! What a pleasant day for a drive from Knoxville to Greensboro for the 2nd stop of the current Van Halen tour! I spent the drive listening to AC/DC until I got to Winston-Salem then popped in some VH to set the mood! Before I got parked I stopped in at CVS to get some fresh batteries for my microphone and was talking to a man, his wife & his kid who came in from Alabama for the show. I also talked to a pilot for Johnson City TN who was buying some earplugs for the show. As usual I forgot mine in the car! There seemed to be a lot of people there from out of town or who had brought their own kids to see what they thought would never happen! Even though I had a good position to tape from I wished this was a better sounding tape but crowd response & facilities accoustics you have no control over! That and with the stage out in the floor as far as it was they really had the rows of seats very close together and the seats would not fold up to give you some extra "legroom". My opinion..... it will be extremely hard to get a "perfect" recording from this tour mainly because of the intensity of the audience's reaction to seeing something that they thought they would have never seen! That being said.....this is still a great recording with pretty good sound! Van Halen was on it and it shows! I for the life of me see how anybody can claim that Wolfgang is miming to Micheal Anthony's vocal tracks when he is on the screen almost with any backing vocals he sings and he is not faking it! And it is refreshing to see Dave dropping his bullshit ramblings and just singing one hit after the next! With luck I will get another chance to see Van Halen next year!

Enjoy!

Notes from the taper ! : After a completely dismal recording of the first show, I was determined to make this one much better. The only problem I encountered was a slightly low recording level and a hippie girl doing the retard dance in the aisle next to me. The low levels were done on purpose - my first night had very hot levels (but not peaking or distorting). I unfortunately had a lot of talkers, screamers and out of time clappers around me who you could hear BETTER than the band at times. Little did I realize that this had little to with my levels, and everything to do with the fact that I didn't use my battery box the first night. Live and learn. On to THIS recording - Overall, I think it came out very good - all vocals and instruments are very up front, crowd noise and chatter is at a minimum. Since I had to boost the levels considerably on the computer, you can hear some slight air in quiet spots, but it's not really that bad at all. The performance is OK..the first night was better, but alas my recording was not. I realize this night was already upped, but I think this is a very good sounding alternate source. Thanks to all who offered their photos for artwork - I took you up on it - Artwork included! :)

notes from the taper/uploader ! : After a string of unseasonably warm (mid-80s) autumn days in Northeast Ohio, Wednesday, October 10, 2007 found hyperkinetic birthday boy David Lee Roth visiting a decidedly cooler, rainy Cleveland with the Van Halen boys. Quicken Loans Arena hosted a sellout crowd for the band's first gig at the venue in over three years, and spirits were high. The set was unchanged from earlier shows in Charlotte, Greensboro, and Toronto. Even Dave's "passing the joint both ways" intro to "Ice Cream Man" and "three parts original, one part inevitable" declaration were the same, indicating that the man's got his schtick down. But the band rocked hard without feeling too rehearsed, and the Cleveland crowd ate it up and returned the love. There were a few novel moments. Instead of telling Dave to "give that person you're talking to a break" during the "Unchained" rap, Wolfgang simply echoed Ted Templeman and said, "Give me a break." Eddie, for his part, acknowledged Diamond Dave by preluding his guitar solo with a bluesy, Hendrix-inspired tear through "Happy Birthday." You'll hear some angle phasing going on during the recording. The taper had his cardioids clipped securely to the sides of his baseball cap (just over the ears). But he had some piss-poor company in his aisle and overzealous neighbors in front of him. So you'll "hear" some head-turning going on. A few guys (and one girl) were more interested in getting beer than giving the music some, and repeatedly disrupted our entire row by squeezing through. One guy even bemoaned the lack of foot space available for his passage: "They should have two foot aisles!" he yelled in our faces. Thanks, buddy. Now in addition to making us get up, you've documented your opinion about arena ergonomics on our recording. Later, you'll hear a lady in taper's row announce that she and her guy friend, "have to pee." Again, thanks for the ignorance, ma'am. Early on you'll hear taper and his neighbors shouting for people in the rows in front of them to sit (the f*ck) down. A lone girl in our section stood up the instant the band launched into "You Really Got Me," so the people behind her were forced to stand if they wanted to see, and so forth. The frustration was all so unnecessary; the girl should have been cool and stayed put until the end, when everyone was up. I believe taper's words are, "Sit down! You're f*ckin' ruining it for everyone else!" Fortunately, by the third song Ms. Ivana Dance parked her rotund ass, and the rest of us sat back down and were again able to clearly see the stage (and video screen) instead of her generous backside. Turns out some guy in our row had gone down to explain our predicament to the chick, who begrudgingly complied a few moments later. A disc change was made after the first part of Alex's drum solo. We felt it was the safest place to do so. Disc Two continues with a loss of about twenty seconds for the change. We should mention that security was very tight at the venue, more so than we've ever encountered there. We don't know if this was specific to Quicken Loans Arena, or if the band or promoter called for it (although we do know that the band / management were not doing an in-house broadcast of the performance for ALD). The arena had permanent walk-through metal detectors installed in 2002, and on this evening there were two guards with hand-held wands waiting just beyond each detector to go over anyone who beeped, for any reason. Still photography was permitted for the event, but when cameras, cell phones or keys triggered the walk-through detectors, fans found themselves hustled aside and given a thorough wanding. We can't think of anything else to report at this time.

notes from the taper ! In order to preserve some element of surprise, knowing I was going to this show, I did not read any setlist or any accounts of the previous shows. I especially didn't want to know of any of Dave's classic raps, and then it turns out there were very few. During the second song I was thinking "when is Dave gonna' get loose?" I was kind of expecting the non-stop action DLR of the eighties. But what I soon after realized is that Dave was actually SINGING the tunes, not speaking them like before, and he sounded really good. Also, unlike before, he was singing a lot more of the actual choruses, where he used to just let EVH and MA take care of it. My guess is that he's got to choose one or the other, the action or the ability to breathe so that he can sing properly. This time, it's very clear that the emphasis is on the songs, and no doubt about it, they sound better as a band today than they did back in the old daze. Great show. Eddie is "back" for sure. It's hard for me to say what is different here than previous shows, but one thing unique about this show is that DLR talks about the fact that he was born in Bloomington(which is about fifty miles south of Indy), and grew up in New Castle, which is where we stopped for gas on the way to the gig. During the show, Dave makes a few local references, and tells a story about his family history in New Castle. Pretty cool. Bloomington is a great little town. This is a very clean recording, there were no whistlers or screamers anywhere near me. Only had one person pass in front of me the whole two hours, during the second song. Thankfully, the crowd around me was the most quiet during the times that the band "brought it down a bit", so none of that was ruined even a little.

Van Halen - Allstate Arena - Rosemont, IL 16.10.2007

notes from the uploader/taper ! Great show, a solid A- Audience recording with very little chatter, i must say that anyone who was or is a fan this is a must see tour. Anyway this recoring came out nice and clean. This has no post production except for the file splits. Very well balanced and the only thing that may bother some is it may be a hair light on bass. Enjoy and please don't redestribute in mp3. Taped the opener also that turned out very nice if anyone is interested in that let me know. Also Artwork would be greatly appreciated.

notes from the taper/uploader ! My comments: I'm not a big Van Halen fan, but it was nice to see one show from the most eagerly anticipated tour of 2007. The performance was in line with other reports from the tour ... David and Eddie seemed to be getting along great (a $1.5 million payday for a two-hour probably helped their spirits), and Wolfie surprised me with how good he was on Michael Anthony's parts. I can't say that I really missed MA musically, although Wolfie has a ways to go to get the "rock star" pose down -- he looked kind of uncomfortable trying to ape for the crowd to get them more into the show. Eddie was on fire, hopping around the stage like a 25-year-old. I'd only seen them on the 2004 "reunion" tour, and this was a vast improvement. The recording itself came out better than I expected. I was in the corner behind the stage and didn't have the benefit of a direct line to the PA -- the sound was a bit muddy to my ears, but the low end is much better represented on the recording. There was almost nobody around me, so there is very little audience chatter from what I have heard so far. I'm sure there are better recordings from this show, but this one is quite listenable and I was happy with it.

Comments from the taper/uploader ! : This recording came out a lot better than I expected. I had attended a show at the Target Center some years ago, and I remember the sound being rather mediocre at best. This time it was much, much better. The recording suffers from a few minor glitches at the start. 5 minutes before the show started, the venue was literally half empty. My seat was in the back row of the first upper level on Eddie's side of the stage. I was a bit concerned this wouldn't be close enough to get a good recording, so I spotted an empty section that was a bit closer to the stage. This is where I recorded the first song. However, toward the end of the song one of the ushers came up to me and said, "Show me your ticket!" (you can hear this on the recording) Apparently a whole group of people with tickets in the section I had invaded showed up at all at the same time! I stalled the best I could so the song could end, then there's a slight static interruption. I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but it apparently had something to do with me turning around and moving back. I was going up some steps, so I must have jolted the Edirol or pulled on a cable too hard. I wasn't moving too gracefully either, as I injured both of my ankles last week and could barely walk, much less climb steps. I tried to walk backwards facing the stage as best as I could, but then there were more steps and this little interference happens again right before the second song. By this time I've moved closer to my actual seat, but I'm still greedy and staying a bit closer than I'm supposed to be, in another empty section. By this time, the arena has suddenly gotten quite full - tons of last minute arrivals. Sure enough, at the second song some guy shows up and I'm in his seat! (you can hear this also) Once more, a tiny dropout occurs. It's crazy, I know. Maybe just bad karma for stealing other people's seats? ;) So I finally decided to retreat to my real seat. I should have done this from the start, as the sound was better there anyway. After this, the recording is flawless with no more glitches. Unfortunately at this point I realized that I had just lost my ticket! I figured I must have dropped it from moving around so much, but I had no idea where and I certainly didn't want to move around any more. So now I was terrified that I was going to get thrown out of the show for not having a ticket. About 10 minutes later, here comes the usher who moved me from my first seat. I was just about ready to be contfronted again, but luckily she was just showing some people to their seats next to me. One more strange occurrence during the show... Some freak just wandered up into our section while we were all standing up. He just went directly behind me, faced my seat, and started grabbing onto this girl in the section above during Jamie's Cryin'. This went on for several minutes. Not only was the guy invading my space, I thought his bullshit babbling was going to be on the recording. Fortunately, you can't hear him. But after the song you can hear me saying, "Alright man, you good?", which managed to get rid of him. Once the show was over, what did I see next to my feet? My ticket, of course. But I could swear it wasn't there before!

Notes from the uploader/taper ! : I made a trip out to Kansas City to see a Van Halen friend who resides in Springfield, MO, who road-tripped himself and brought one of his friends. Fortunately, I had a blast in spite of the bad performance by the band. To read up on my review of this performance and my time in Kansas City, go here: http://www.diamonddavidleeroth.com/forums/index.php?topic=18639 As far as the recording goes, it would be a solid A if not for the loud, booming bass element. I didn't feel like equalizing the bass, and no volume adjustment was needed, so I did not change the audio properties of my master recording at all. So this is the raw master recording; the only editing was cutting up the WAV's and converting to FLAC. With respect to the bass issue, I set the battery box to a 95 Hz rolloff as I have done on all the other shows I've taped with this gear, but the bass is nevertheless too loud. The bass was very loud and thumping where I was sitting, so I guess in that sense you're getting a good representation of what it sounded like from my seat. I was sitting next to a wall which kind of divides the sections of the upper bowl of the Sprint Center, so this may have contributed or caused the bass boom. If someone wants to remaster and get rid of the excess bass, go for it. Even with the bass issue, I think it's far and away my best Van Halen recording, and it holds its own pretty well with the best recordings so far on this tour. Otherwise, the recording is surprisingly up front for a nosebleed section recording, and very clear with almost no audience chatter. There is good dynamic range and good stereo separation as this time, I had the time to get set up properly. I made sure to sit basically motionless the entire time to get a nice, consistent sound throughout. Between "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "1984" I decided to goof off and state the band, venue, city and date, along with stating that there will be an encore, in homage to the taper of Van Halen, Greensboro February 3, 1984 who said something similar in his recording. After "Jump," I also decided to ask for the opinions of the two people I saw the show with, and give my own opinion, in tribute to the taper of Van Halen, Philadelphia March 21, 1984 and his friend Gary C. who did the same thing 23 years ago. Finally, this recording is "marked" by my friend intentionally blowing a whistle at a few points, most of them at the end of the show, which is "homage" to the notorious horn that marked the Van Halen, Oakland June 11, 1981 audience recording. Finally, if any of you heard/saw someone playing piano at the Holiday Inn Aladdin in Kansas City until 2:30 AM after the show, that was me. ticket are included. ~~~~~ Mastering Information ~~~~~ Remastered by ErocNet

Notes from the taper/ uploader ! : I was thinking about driving down to this show all week, and I finally pulled the trigger the day before, securing a floor seat on TicketBastard. I drove down to this sucker and pulled off one of the best recordings of this tour, IMHO. Because I was on the floor, security was all around and I really had to wait until the house lights went down to get the mics exactly where I wanted them. I accomplished this a minute into "You Really Got Me" and from there on the sound is clear, crisp, well balanced and up front. There is very little audience chatter, and the whistles, claps and screams are pretty quiet other than at the beginning of "You Really Got Me." There are a few occasions where people are walking in front of me, so the sound will change on those occasions, but only for a few seconds at that. I felt no need to adjust anything so here is the raw master recording. I would also like to thank the person sitting immediately to my right in seat 13 who saw that I was wearing mics, recognized the mission and without my knowing it until the show was over, laid low to help me out. Hopefully he'll show up to comment on this show. To get my review of the actual show itself, which I thought was a great performance, check out http://www.diamonddavidleeroth.com/forums/index.php?topic=18674

Van Halen - East Rutherford, New Jersey 03.11.2007 (Source 1 - Incomplete)

Van Halen
Meadowlands Izod Center
East Rutherford, New Jersey
United States of America
November 3, 2007

Notes from the taper/uploader ! : I was going to call this one "Meltdown at the Meadowlands," but after I heard the sound quality, not to mention the fact that it is incomplete, I decided to pass on the formalities such as titles, artwork, etc. The show is in the category of forgettable (or unforgettable..depends how you look at things). I guess the high point of the evening's drama was Eddie Van Halen stomping around like a 3-year old because his guitar cable kept getting tangled (as he yanked on it violently)...no wait...it would have to be him screaming..SCREAMING at the tech guys on the side of the stage for the better part of the show...no...the part where he flipped the monitor over, because it was either too loud, or he didn't like what was coming out of it..no...maybe it was when he picked said monitor up and threw it across the stage...NO..I got it..it was when he proceeded to pick up the monitor and throw it OFF the stage. That was it. I'm not making any of this up. There were some other noteworthy occurrences..like during one of Ed's fits, where he was switching guitars.."and the Cradle Will Rock" starts..only problem is..Ed is not holding a guitar..but it starts nonetheless, with the swoosing flanged guitar..that's he's not playing..it's pre-recorded..so is the rhythm part..I'm pretty sure it's a keyboard, but I never noticed it, because he was usually playing. This show seemed to measure up to the KC show everyone was talking about..except Dave was great. I gained a newfound respect for him tonight, as he was the consumate professional as his bandmate stomped, sneared and screamed through 90% of the show, during which he paid little attention to his playing, stopping at times, screwing up at others. After the monitor toss, he pretty much threw and swatted at anything and everything in his path. I feel bad for Wolfie too. I can tell this is all getting to him fast. He looked like he wanted to be ANYWHERE else for pretty much the entire show. At times I caught him staring at Ed with this "what the f*ck??" look on his face. At one point, after one of his meltdowns, I guess Ed realized that yeh..there are like 10,000 people watching this, he tried to do his goofy dancing and jumping pikes, then he goes over to Wolfie's side and picks up a straw cowboy hat, puts it on, then tries to put it on Wolf, only Wolfs backs up, slaps the hat away, then proceeds to kick it off the stage into the crowd. This thing is unravelling..fast. After the monitor throwing incident, Ed came back up and looked almost possessed. Very sad indeed. Sad for everyone involved. Sad for the fans that shelled out $500 to be in the VIP circle. Actually, it was sad for any fan who shelled out even $1 to see this charade tonight. Saddest of all for the multi-millionaire guitarist whose band is making 1.5 million per show that he can't put everything aside for 2 hours a day, play his music and act like a swell guy. In any event..here it is. The recording matches the performance. BTW - I'm not on the whole VH-bashing bandwagon either. I'm just really disgusted at the show Ed turned in last night. I considered not going to MSG next week, but figured I might as well, and hopefully go out on a high note. I also tried some new mics on this one, and was not happy at ALL with the results. I'm going back to my old setup for the next show. Could have been any combo of factors though..sour spot for recording, bad mix, bad mic placement. Who knows. Couldn't have happened at a better show though.

notes from the taper/uploader ! Don't know what the other guy who posted a partial of this show was talking about. I was on the floor approx. 30 rows back in front of the stack on the right, 6 rows FOB, and the sound was great, though unnecessarily very loud, but it looked to me like Eddie was pushing 16 5000 Watt Amps on stage. Saw no temper tantrums, though my wife said she saw him adjust (not throw) a monitor. Old farts like us remember when musicians fiddled on stage with their guitar cords. Eddies appeared more like a heavy rope, which my have something to do with all the Wattage he was pushing. So we saw him tug on it a few times, but I did not see any attitude whatsoever. Seemed to me like the love fest between Ed and Dave was still going strong, or at least they pretended pretty well that it was, Anyway, we took the 16 year old, he was not impressed with the band until they played Magic Bus ,,, at which point Van Halen garnered the kid's respect and turned my little Who freak into one of their newest fans. Here it is, warts and all, but very few glitches in this recording, plus the sound is my typical high grade, unlike most other recording I have heard from this tour thusfar. Source Info: Schoeps CCM4's > SD744T @ 24/96 > firewire to hard drive of dedicated music only computer > Bit Conversion and re-sampled to 16/44.1 with Sound Forge 7.0 > indexed in Sound Forge 4.5 > CD set up with CD Architect 4.5 > CD burned with CD Architect 5.0 onto Mitsui Gold CD > Extracted to Internet Capable Computer with EAC > FLAC > MP3.
