South Korea - Rising from the Ashes of War
South Korea is a nation that has seen severe hardship. Korea's history is marked by frequent invasion and domination by its neighbor countries, especially Japan. After World War II, the Japanese military government in Korea was removed. The newly independent Korean nation barely had a chance to begin recovering from the damage done by their Japanese oppressors before the Korean War broke out, plunging the country into an armed conflict that would leave it divided into two nations, The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea to the north, and the Republic of Korea to the south.
While North Korea is still struggling to stabilize its economy, the South Korean economy has grown at an astonishing rate, placing it on the same economic level as some nations of the European Union. This is an impressive accomplishment, considering that South Korea was once economically equal to the poorest nations of Asia and Africa. As one of the Four Dragons of East Asia, South Korea shows signs of continued growth far into the future.
