April 18th 2009
2 class times
9 am to 12 :00 noon and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Getting yourself in shape
Getting your horse in shape
Getting your tack in shape
Getting your attitude in shape

This clinic will focus on the importance of why shaping up to ride can make for a better ride, better control and better performance.
Gives riders ideas and techniques they can use everyday. We’ll give positive reinforcements and ideas for attitude adjustments for both
rider and horse. We’ll demonstrate proper tack fitting and adjusting, as well as some ideas on fixing those springtime first ride jitters.
“In my experience as a trail guide it isn’t so much about the horse, its about the people and what can we do to alleviate their discomfort.”

Clinic Two

Overcoming Trail Trials

May 2nd
9 am to 12 :00 noon and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Trail Safety
Overcoming Trail Obstacles
Overcoming Your Fear
Overcoming Your horse’s Fear
This clinic will focus on the ever-present trail obstacles. We’ll offer techniques on handling different trials. We will offer the coping
mechanisms on overcoming the fear and nerves we have all encountered at one time or another. We will provide ideas for
keeping safe on the trail, and what to do when trouble does arise.
“I believe fear and respect go hand-in-hand. If you don’t have respect for yourself, your horse and your environment, you’re
already in trouble. It’s ok to say you’re afraid because that tells me that you have respect”

Clinics taught by Joanne Richey.
Joanne is a licensed trail guide in Northern Idaho with 7 years experience guiding people on scenic mountain trail rides and has over 15 years experience with teaching horses and people. Joanne has shown horses in English, Western and reining, earning numerous awards and trophies including high point rider of the year in both English and western three years . One of her ideas is that everything that a horse needs to learn for showing can be taught on the trail. Several years ago “Horse & Rider” magazine interviewed Joanne for an article appropriately named “Outward Bound” which covered many of the obstacles we face on the trail.
“I can’t tell you how many times I have heard someone say “I’m just a trail-rider”. I have a great amount of respect for the “trail rider" as they have overcome and been through more obstacles and trials than what we could ever encounter in an arena. I have yet to see a cougar, bear or moose in the confines of an arena. The trail riders in this area have been through rushing water, attacking grouse, angry bees, wildlife, and the myriad of the crazy things we find in the mountains of Idaho and Montana . I am amazed at how good of shape and how sure-footed as well as respectful the trail–wise horses become.”
