During the late evening hours in the country, a frequent song of nature rises in the woods
and again from the prairie to the north. A chorus of coyotes, probably only three or four
but sounding like dozens, yip and howl enough to stir up all the neighborhood dogs.
When three or four of anything sets up a howl it always seems like a great deal more. But
the woods are full of silent walkers, and most of them are bigger than a coyote. It is
simply not their nature to make a fuss, but they are just as important -- and probably more
so -- than the coyote.
So it is with human beings. Some howl to demand attention. But the quiet ones walk on
in their serene ways and live to be victors. They know it is not the noise but the action
that gets them there.
