Unlike to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association the European Rodeo Cowboy Association also called E. R. C. A. is an amateur rodeo. Cowboys and Cowgirls can win money but other than in the United States the contestants can't live from their winnings. The members of the European Rodeo Cowboy Association do it not just for money, they do it mainly for fun. The European Rodeo Cowboy Association started 1971 with 167 Cowboys and Cowgirl members. It was the first "Western-Riding-Association" in Europe. Mr. Alan Jacob was the founder of the E. R. C. A. and not only that he was the one who brought the first "American Quarter Horse" to Germany.

Now in 2001 over 32,000 Cowboys and Cowgirls have passed through the E.R.C.A. helping support the "Sport of Rodeo" and showing "The Flag" in Europe. The members are Americans, Germans and of course cowboys and cowgirls from all over Europe. The E.R.C.A. established a rulebook, with rules and regulations to encourage a fair competition and to secure the animals used during the rodeos with respect to humane facts.
Most of the members are organized in local chapters. Local chapters help to transfer knowledge about the E. R. C. A. They also encourges family activities like barbeques, etc. during the 0ff-season or during the week.
To participate in the E. R. C. A. is quite worth the effort. The contestants face a good competition during a season and the competitors within the top 4 positions in each event get awarded with trophies like saddles and buckles at the "end of year awards banquet". Every weekend the top positions in every event can also win prize-money. The E. R. C. A. is an USAREUR sanctioned non-profit organzization. The Thunder Guys provide a lot of entertainment at some of our Rodeos
But Rodeo in Europe is not only interesting for the competitors because rodeo and especially the E.R.C.A is really family-orientated. Fun for the whole family is one of the objectives of the E. R .C. A.
The E.R.C.A. is proud to help to keep the "Western Heritage" alive on this side of the Atlantic and to encourge the friendship between Americans and Europeans.
The membership fees (per year) for the E. R. C. A. are the following:
Active Members: $ 60, Members: $ 50, Family members: $ 35.
Hopefully we see you at one of the rodeos. When the show begins and you hear the words "Let's rodeo" you will be like most of our new members fascinated by a world full of action, friends and fun trying to live that fading American dream. And If you like it be part of it and become a member of the European Rodeo Cowboy Association.
