Maldivian Chart of Knowledge - Since the Arab traveller by the name of Yoosuf Naib converted the people of Meedhoo into Islam and propagated Islamic teachings, Meedhoo has been known as the centre of learning and religious education. But the Islamic renaissance heralded in this island at the return of the renowned indigenous scholar, Jamaluddin (known as Vaadhoo Dhannakaleygefan), from long residence in Yemen. He established an enduring tradition of education in Islamic law in Vaadhoo Island in Huvadhoo Atoll which spread across the Equatorial Channel into Meedhoo on Addu atoll. And since then Meedhoo has been responsible for maintaining this tradition and passing it up to the present generation through a line of famous and erudite scholars.
