It seemed like a flash-in-the-pan idea. It also seemed destined to fail in the realms of comedy. But it didn’t. In the spring of 2003, three men decided to launch an improv troupe designed for the masses in Ogden, Utah. A year later, Off The Wall, Ogden found itself dominating the northern, improvised comedy circuit of the Beehive State.

“We were basically just sick of having to fight for a spot to play with other troupes,” says co-founder/manager Caleb Parry. Until that time only one other troupe existed in the vicinity of Ogden, but that all changed with the collaboration of Parry and his business partners Derek Hendricks and Austin Nava. The creation of Off The Wall was to function as an outlet for their community, with the intent to display local people performing.

Offering shows every Friday night at the Terrace Plaza Playhouse and workshops twice a week for anyone interested in the craft, Off The Wall, Ogden bursts with creative energy. Hendricks says, “You know, we always wanted a chance to perform improv and no one really would let us. Now we have the power to give others like ourselves an opportunity to let loose and have fun.” Parry and Hendricks also take part in the shows, each week alternating between the positions of performer and emcee. And while OTW SLC specializes in long form, the Ogden location prefers to demonstrate their skills in the short form area of improv. Classic games, such as ‘Lie Detector’, ‘Bad Advice’, and ‘Hecklers’, never ceases to pull forth creative, impromptu material from the players that entertain a large crowd of fans.

Flash-in-the-pan no more. These men and women have proved themselves worthy on the comedic battlefields and continue to do so. Are you not entertained? Well then, check these guys out.
