One of the most popular Transformers episodes ever, "Call of the Primitives" was a part of the third season of the US series, called Transformers: 2010 in Japan. It was animated by a different studio than the rest of the run, namely Toei Studios from Japan. The quality is significantly higher than most Transformer adventures, with a very strong anime look. Also the episode features many popular characters such as the Dinobots, the Predacons and Sky Lynx. Rumour has it that in drawing this so beautifully, Toei blew a significant chunk of the season's budget, resulting in the studio not drawing for the series again, and several poorly-animated episodes being made to try and get the season back on budget.
The episode begins with Rodimus Prime and a squad of Autobots pinned down on a moon by Galvatron and the Decepticons. An attempt at a counter-attack by the Autobots breaks down as the Dinobots are hypnotised by a mysterious call. All of the "primative" Transformers have the same fate, and fly away inside Trypticon to find the caller. Meanwhile the energy being Tornatron drains Cybertron and the Transformers on it, then the Autobots and Decepticons on the moon. The primitive Transformers are now the only thing which can stop Tornatron.....
