This is my first ever picture of Guard Turtle. I used to draw turtles a lot differently. More like the one on the bottom. But this was the first time I had tried this type of eye after I came up with the idea for Guard Turtle in my head. Yup, this started it all. And look at how much he's changed over the years! This picture came a page later (after a drawing with a primitive bad guy that wasn't even facing the audience) and was the first real defined picture of Buglar Z. It also showed one of the ideas I had about Guard Turtle being more infallible than he is, but I decided that a hero that doesn't have the possibility to fail doesn't make a good comic. One of the good results of my Samurai Jack sabadical. The character design for this one was so styleised and good that I had to give him a try for myself. Hopefully more Samurai Jack stuff will follow on this page.
I drew this one on the way back from Ireland. I had been reading DragonsDawn, which is one of the Dragon Riders of Pern series. I'm always so into dragons when I read those books. So I decided to draw one and this is what resulted. I like it because of the eye. I many of my cartoons, the eyes are everything... This is another of the infamous "Guard Turtle beating up on Ninjas" series. I seem to have a lot of those cause there was one time like sophmore year where I adapted Guard Turtle to be all four of the ninja turtles. It looked pretty good, like chibi ninja turtles. Anyway, I always had them fight ninja penguins because I knew how to draw those well. This is the final test sketch I used to decide what color Roger would be. As you can see, it was pretty evenly matched. I especially liked the Maroon, but the purple just worked best with his character for his neutral color. Maybe I could use the others for when he get's really emotion driven or something. Ooo, or maybe like a fire red for when he's pissed off.
This is one of my tangents that I kinda went on in high school, but I've reopened after a moment of inspiration from this cartoon of leonardo (warning: spoilers if you haven't seen the whole series). This is just a picture of him looking unsure. The faces I drew in my notes the next day were much better looking, so I'll have to draw some more. This one is a scene from the "Tales of Leo" episode. I like this episode because of the feeling of Family that it has in it. Like Raph is crying because Leo is so beat up, and Raph never crys for anything. So like one of those heart wrenching episodes. One of the San Jose drawings. I did it in like 5 minutes waiting in the terminal at LAX, but I like how it turned out. A different angle on an old favorite, but still with 22% more majesty.
Another San Jose drawing. I drew this one on a bus. A whole lot of the drawings I did that weekend were really quick and sketchy because I just wanted to get a whole bunch of ideas out of my head, but I kinda like how this one turned out. I just wish I had shown the motion better so that it doesn't look like he's just kicking from his hip, but that his knee would be involved too... This robot kinda looks like the one from Rayman. It's one of those pictures where I thought, "Big Robot" and just kept adding stuff until I was done. Once again, only like a 10 minute drawing, and I was watching TV at the time, but I think it can stand alone as a kinda cool drawing. There were some much better ones, but they would have require a lot of explaining to make any sense, so I only scanned in the previous 3 because they can stand alone.
